Excuse the dumb question but, are there any moving lights with RGBW color mixing and shutters in the same fixture? Our venue is looking at buying a few movers. Last year we rented a High End Solaframe 750 which was great apart from the CMY mixing and CTO.
 
  • Higher output light engine
  • More options for LED engine manufacturers
  • Fewer "binning" issues than discrete LEDs have
  • simpler optics
  • easiest "next step" in engineering since all the predecessors are based on white point sources
  • the current ML user community understands how to work with CMY and CTO
  • the current ML service industry knows how to repair/replace a modular light engine which might be used by several manufacturers, which also means fewer service parts to keep around.
  • I expect there are other business considerations like patents, licensing IP, etc.

Robe T1 Profile https://www.robe.cz/t1-profile/ and DL7S profile https://www.robe.cz/dl7s-profile/ are both rgb+ color mixing LED source fixtures.

I have seen them in person but just at a demo, not in any side-by-side comparison to other current fixtures as we were not planing to buy any profile fixtures.

In addition to the above Robe products, I think Elation's Fuse Profile (https://www.elationlighting.com/fuze-profile) are the only theatrically oriented additive LED profile movers.

Some other reasons for white+CMY:
  • Color rendering - you need a pretty big mix of LED colors to get a solid spectra without any gaping holes, this is especially important for face light.
  • The architectural/commercial market is pushing white light engine development, which means there are a lot more options for manufacturers.
Edit: also, when it comes to lumens the numbers do underepresent color mixing engines' output. As I understand it, the brightnes metrics aren't equiped to handle multi-colored sources.
 
Color rendering was always huge for me on corporate events where moving lights were spec'd. PSAV was purchasing tons of GLP Spot one's and X4s and what the fixture thought was white (probably RGB at 100%) was god awful. L1s all over the place having to recreate the profile after deciding for their event what the tradeoff between best color white and best output.
I lit one show where all 25 were red. Very thankful.
