Quickie...1K Par 64 & Blackwrap...

Using Blackwrap for a Par 64 for a barn door or shuttering effect, good idea or BAD idea? No barn doors available for the fixture size. ( At least instock and in a quick turn around.)

Do you think the black wrap will burn up? Instruments are on for periods of 4 minutes at a time, then cool for 10 to 15 minutes, then fire again.

Thoughts?

No problem, that's what black wrap is for. If you need tape, go to your local auto parts store and buy Muffler Tape (no other tape is safe). It's thin flexible aluminum "tape" with a sticky backing designed for high temperatures. It'll hold your black wrap no problem. However you will probably have sticky goo clean up problems on your PAR 64 later... So think the decision through carefully.

If you do tape it, I second the decision to use muffler tape. If you can just use a very large hose band clamp do attach it to the fixture, do that, you won't have to worry about tape residue.

Or if you wanted to be really cool you could use a gel frame. put the blackwrap through the hole about 1.5" the open the frame bend the blackwrap so it's captured between the two side of the frame, make some nice folds so the straight blackwrap conforms to the interior diameter of the gel frame, and viola instant half of a top hat, the folds act as a rib to stabilize the rest of the sheet.

Oh yeah , I forgot the most important thing. BlackWrap is much better than regular tinfoil at keeping the evil Government brainwave scanners from scanning your brain at night. Just make sure to tape it on real tight with high quality Gaff Tape. This nightly ritual has kept me sane for years. ;>

Wow what a post you started out with huge style points for the gel frame and then went deep off course. Sounds like you still refinishing that table top and floor after every show.

Thanks guys. I've used blackwrap before for masking off light leaks on instruments, but never as a barn door for a PAR. I got nervous because as we were cutting applying the blackwrap, it started to smoke a bit. I monitored it all day friday, so it does cook okay. (no duh).

BTW- The gel frame mount on the PAR works great for just shaping the blackwrap to for a reasonably good seal on the light.

However, Van's idea about using the gel frame itself has got me thinking. I might do more playing during a clean up focus on Monday.

Thanks again.

You know what buddy it's starting to sound like you started using that black wrap about 10 years too late. I think they already got you.

Time to sell your clothes and move to Eugene.

Off topic (compared to where this post has diverged to) but you can always use clothes pins to attach BlackWrap. We do it all the time on film sets with gel, wrap, diffusion, etc. Might be just what you need, and very cheap and clean alternative to muffler tape (eww)
