Just recently for some unknown reason have been able to start getting stagecraft digest again - this given my firewall finally accepts them. Yep, not much changed... what appears in the list of what's posted doesn' t have numbers on it below, the search still don't work, still fighting with Frank, length of one's title following their name is still going on, phillips verses square drive debate still going on - this all years later.

None the less there was an interesting item in #1959 that caught my eye, than further discussion.

Good stuff for people to keep in the back of their mind - stuff I never thought about how they did it on either but find fascinating.

Subject: Way old school effect

Does anyone know how to do the ( I don't know the name of it) effect that used to be projected on the wall behind a rock and roll band? It was before 'videos' were ever heard of say in the '60s and or '70s. It looked like someone put a drop of water betweeen two gels and tapped it to make the blot change in shape.
Any input would be most appreciated!

Thanks

It's called liquid light.

Here is a website that explains it. http://www.phinnweb.org/retro/garage/lightshows.html

I saw a show about this recently but for the life of me I can't
remember what it was. I do know that the guy used this technique on an
overhead projector. Pretty cool.

AHH the old days

You used a overhead projector, and two clear glass dishes. Mineral oil was used with various food colors added, these were manually run with people moving the plates, taping them against one another to spread and shape the blob.

All great fun

It started at the Fillmore East, Bill Graham's Theatre on 2nd Ave in NY. It was called the Joshua Light Show, and the creator's name was Joshua White. That's also the place where Bob See and Bob Goddard started out.

I remember watching Pete Townshend of The Who destroy guitars in front of the blobs of oil!

That proves I'm old.

Yes but having been there also makes you REALLY cool.

Haud testimonium postulo.

WHO (?) I bet that would look really groovy spelt out with parcans.

Was Jefferson Airplane anything like Jefferson Starship? And how many CB members are familiar with either?

I must be cool too since I'm that old. Steve, I was working just down the street at the Village Arena Theatre on East 4th in the country rock musical "Touch."

Speaking of Bob Goddard, have you ever worked with Rosemary?

Yes I have. She is one of my favorite people in our business.

Example:

Her company name with Mike Callahan for a while: "Consolidated Edification".

Back of the T-shirt; "No Problem"

Pure poetry.

Steve,

I'm sure we've met or at least spoken before. I have that shirt.

I used to supply lighting and labor for Michael and Rosemary at many of their events around the city.

She can make a stagehand blush!

Perhaps some of the gear came from my company, Production Arts. Michael and Rosemary rented a lot from us.

Let's catch up at USITT or LDI!

Off subject and calling out of the old timers. but good to know no doubt in the calling crew for the future for such a topic. Such art must not be lost thus the need for such concepts to be posted and other generations to pass on their knowlege. Me, I'm not that old yet :) though I do know the difference and sameness of starship and airplaine in still liking the before they got starship.

The segue from Jefferson Airplane through to Starship along with side lines into Hot Tuna is a space for a whole nuther thread. Grace Slick had one of the greatest voices of her generation. Jorma Kaukonen recently was in Adelaide for the Guitar festival. I had heard the Airplane was touring again.

The oil wheel effect was also done by a Melbourne LD who used the name LSD FOGG. I saw John Mayall in Adelaide with Freddy Robinson (one of the great blues guitarists) in about 1969 with an LSD FOGG design.

I recently bought a cheapo chinese oil wheel effect. Can't run it for longer than 10 minutes at a time or the silicon that holds the two glass rondells together melts and the oil escapes. Found that out to my cost. I was able to source a new wheel though. I don't use it for shows any more I put it on for ten minutes while I listen to "Blows Against The Empire" the very first Jefferson Starship album. Which I still have on vinyl.

Me too! I wanted to cite Janis Joplin (Fillmore WEST) rather than Airplane, but found the video clip from the Smothers' Bros. TV show.

"LSD FOGG" didn't have anything to do with Lighting and Sound Design, did it? I'm kinda thinking it means something else.;)

My roommate told me about using his mother's Pyrex baking dishes and putting brine shrimp in them on an overhead projector. Worked great until the shrimp cooked and stopped moving. ("Random moving gobo" anyone? The first "media server"?) His mother was rather irritated with him! The school was not happy with him either when they found out he had rewired the projector so the lamp could be dimmed while the fan stayed on constant power.

Another liquid lightshow was performed by Mad Mick's Light Mix for the Nektar tour. Same concept, Overhead projectors, oil and food coloring. Anyone remember Nektar?
