Strand Palette Console + VNC Server

Hello,
Yesterday I discovered that the remote pallete software, aside from the color being screwey when used with paralells on my macbook, wont let me record and edit cues remotely. So I thought that I might install a vnc server on our console, and connect to it from my laptop. First off does the embedded OS allow services to be installed? Has anyone tried this successfully or unsuccessfully before?

I don't believe the remote palette will let you record or alter cues. It should let you select channels and adjust levels to selected channels and you should be able to run cues, subs and the like.

So if what you are saying is correct, thirdoctive, the remote user (LD in the auditorium) can alter levels and then tell the board operator in the booth to "record/update"? I was doing this in 1988 with an RFU and a remote monitor. At least with our 1980 LightPalette and Designer's Remote we could do almost everything from the Production Table the Board Op in the booth could do. (Though in IA houses it became solely a remote display.)

You need to set it up as a separate login, not monitor or user. You should be able to do that rather easily, can't remember where the setting is.

First of all, someone ought to tell Strand to bring back Mac support for the designer remote as they had it for the 300/500 series.

Second, I wouldn't install ANYTHING on your console that you didn't get from Strand, that is just asking for trouble.

Third, as was mentioned, you have to set the remote software to "Login" as opposed to "Monitor." This option should be in preferences, or whatever they call it in Windoze language.

No he's got the software right Alex. You now have your choice of running Palette (the monitor only software) and Remote Palette (the one where you can fire cues). I believe that it's purely a matter of they don't unlock the ability to edit unless you pull the master dongle out of the console and plug it in your laptop. They give you the remote software for free but somewhere they have to draw the line on how much you can do with it. That line is the dongle. I'm sure you could pay them for another dongle that would allow you to remotely edit.

Not only would I not mess with the software I bet you might find they say it's illegal since you are essentially trying to hack the system to use features you didn't pay for.

Well turns out the problem was the software on my laptop was version 10 and the software on the console was older. Once I upgraded the console it allowed me to do pretty much anything from the remote pallete.

What a bummer, why write two pieces of software when the original software for the 300/500 was self contained in one and you just had to change the prefs. Sad...

also.... you can copy the software off and run it in demo mode for 10 minutes at a time... which just happens to usually be long enough to run a lamp check and not have to dig out the dongle from wherever I left it last. I do believe you can use the xconnect software with the new consoles. My favorite of all though was when they initially rolled out the pallets with the original software they installed Xconnect on the console so you could run it in "500" mode.

I believe it's all part of the options you pay for on the dongle just like the number of channels and universes. There is the OLE which is free. If you want to have remote video which just allows you to watch the console, that's an upgrade fee. If you want to run Remote Palette (the full remote control software) it's another upgrade option. As a result there are three different programs depending on the level of access you have. Unlike the past once you pay for the access, then you can do anything you want to with it. We talked about how cool it would be to add a rack mount computer and a touch screen to my stage manager's panel. I can do that myself for a little over $1000, I can set up a computer in the booth to work as a backup, I can run the console wirelessly from my lap top... all with no extra fees to Strand.
