you have to keep in mind 14awg is rated for 15 amps. An edisonplug is only rated for 15 amps. A 20 amp rated edison has a horizontal blade on the neutral.
Funny they give the thing a "gauge" rating as they contain no wire! (Yes, late one night, I widdled one apart... I forget the circumstances.. ) I guess it's rating is based on the prong configuration which is for 15 amp. From what I remember, the flat metal inside it looked thicker that what I would consider 14, although judging flattened out pieces of metal as what a round wire might have been is probably not my strong point!
The way these things are built, I doubt you would smoke one with two 1k pars plugged into it... BUT--- If you were to use one on a show, put 20 amps through it, and there was a fire, you can be darn sure you would get sued! So, don't.
As for use on equipment drawing less than 15 amps, but on a 20 amp breaker, well, this subject has been hashed and rehashed. There is a recent thread about the 15 vs 20 amp Edison plugs that I think would apply to this as well.
