Impression vs. Legend

Looks like the Legend has the Impression beat intensity wise. However, looks like they will have more halo problems with the addition of white. Also, G, B, and W are 5w on the Legend, with R being 2w. Why not just make everything 5w? The Legend is also a heavier, bigger fixture. One of the things I like about the Impression is the fact that it is small.

I wouldn't be surprised if Elation has a 90 3w or 5w waiting in the wings for something like this too. They are already bumping up all their current fixtures with 3w versions now. That would be the real test, a 180w or 450w Impression vs the Legend. Maybe even a 90 1w Tri-Color LED version, 270w total. Then, I think the Legend would be completely blown away, but at what cost. The Impression already lists for 7 grand, how much would the Legend or a 180/270/450w Impression be?

This is exactly what I'm waiting for. A moving head with a useful intensity that uses all tri-color LEDs to completely eliminate the "color halation" that people don't like about LEDs. But that'll have to wait another few years until prices on Tri-Color LEDs come down.

Slightly related, a few years ago at LDI, Rosco had an LED cap for a Source 4. Then things got quiet and people stopped talking about LED Source 4's. Might something be in the works?

I think it could be done, an LED S4 conversion, using a unit that replaces not only the cap but the reflector itself.

It's exciting. I'll get to say "I was there".

Yea, Tri-Colors aren't cheap. I was looking into some DLED Bricks for cyc washes. The 12w wouldn't be enough, so I was looking into the 12 3w version or the 36 Tri-Color version. I can get the 12 3w version for about $250-300 cheaper which is about half the cost of another 12 3w version. I am not concerned with halos either, since I would line the cyc with them. And again, they would be cheaper to rent out then say a 3 cell Altman Sky Cyc for a week. I could do roughly 3 DLED Brick 36s for everyone 3 cell Altman Sky Cyc. So 4 three cell Altman Sky Cycs or 12 DLED Brick 36s? I think I like the latter, especially in tight dimmer situations.

I had heard something about the Altman LED Cyc unit not to long ago, but have never seen one or heard of on since until now. If I don't really hear about it and/or see it, must not be the greatest in the world. Any info on it?

It's not on their website and they don't advertise it, how Altman I know, but it's on Stage Directions, time to dig for the link.

I think...Live Design? Said that the Impression was the first LED moving head fixture that could begin to challenge a 575w typical fixture. Who knows...

I can speak first hand and say that an Impression can indeed challenge a 575w wash fixture. The only area I think a Studio Color 575 would win in the ability to adjust beam size from the console and cost. Intensity wise, an Impression is probably brighter then a Studio Color 575. It kept up with the Power Spot 575 just fine, and the optic train on the PS is better then a Studio Color. The Studio Color would also have a higher maintenance cost, thanks to more moving parts and lamps to replace. It is also physically larger as well. The LEDs on the Impression also don't generate any heat, another plus. I can't speak for a Mac 600 because I have never actually used them. The Legend has more powerful LEDs, so it will beat a 575 wash most likely. So what do I get derekleffew ?

The uneven fields that I was talking about on the other thread dosn't seem to be a problem with all lights, just ones that don't match their LEDs well. Personally,I'm quite fond of the idea of the 4 and 5 color systems. The Martin Stagebar has 5 different colors and mixes quite well and has great ambers and pastels, it's just extremely expensive comparatively.

I have a feeling though that slowly, that price and quality gap is going to change. So I'm keeping an eye on the low end of the LED world. After all, unless you are CK/Phillips and can buy out your suppliers, you aren't making the LEDs themselves, anyway.

AMDJ has released a Tri-Color PAR 64. Rather pricey, but once the price on those tri-color units comes down over the next few years, the technology should become quite affordable.

You get to bring the fixtures to my garage, where I can put my light meter on them. And write yet another non-scientific experiment results. I can provide the MAC600, if you can supply the (non-ETC) Impression.

edit: I wonder if they'll confiscate my light meter at LDI, along with my stock of Roscolene?

Problem is I'm not planning a trip to Vegas anytime soon. Florida and Georgia, kinda the wrong way though. I can do this however, linky.

Next time it comes through, I'll put a meter on it. I am confident however that it will beat a 575w wash. On the red in the photos in the link above, the Impression was brighter. On the frosted blue, there was no question that it was brighter. The white, it went to the Power Spot 575. I have a photo of blue not frosted as well, Impression also won that. I should have taken out a ParNel lamped 750w and compared it to that as well.

We had Elation as a sponsor for our Christmas open house this year and they brought the Impression. It has K2 Luxeons (3w, I believe). We set it up next to a Studio Color 575M with a brand new lamp and did a shoot out on the warehouse wall (approx 50ft away). You could see the Impression's beam inside the Studio Colors

The Studio Color does still have the adjustable beam spread, which will always tilt the meter a bit in its favor, but the Impression is there in terms of brightness.

Well, I saw the Elation Impressions on a show tonight, and have to admit they were brighter than I expected. They were in pods along with VL3K spots and Showguns, and provided nice washes. But the VL500s were brighter, and the Impressions were used more as a special effect light.

But how were the VL500s lamped? There is a 1000w or 1200w tungsten version as well as a 575w or 700w arc version.

The VL500 were tungsten and had clear lenses, so not really a fair comparison, I agree. IF the Impressions were RGBAW, I'd be a fan, as there were also Martin Stagebar54™s on the show, and the color mixing on those is great!
