Tradition has it that a single, 100W or so, light bulb placed on a stand center-stage will either: a) keep the ghosts away, or b) keep the ghosts company. In actuality, a ghost light provides enough light for a user to enter and find one's way to the worklight controls.

ghost light ????
What kind of ghost light do you use?
origin of a ghost light?

Do not confuse with ghost load.

Or in a city that requires it as an integral part of Fire safety code.

Not just a good idea, but the law? We had a stage manager in our road house decide he was too tired to replace the burnt out lamp in his ghostlight (oh, I'll do it in the morning) and a crew member walked off the stage and ended up in the pit and onto the instruments being set up for the next show. We dont even want to talk about how much that cost the school...although the student had an illegal key to the theater, he still walks with a limp today.

Shyte!! That sucks!

Yea, for all parties involved. The department (fine arts, not drama) not only had to eat the w/c costs, but also pay to replace the damaged instruments and hire more techs to get everything up and running before the performace. Let's just say, that ghost light has never burned out again!

As for the tech, he gave up theater about three years after it happened - he also had his fingers crushed by a rolling catwalk. Guess he figured he needed to get into a safer environment.
