Hello. Please be kind while I shake off the cobwebs (we used to use rubber cement) and the dust (some DE-diatomaceous earth?). Jack
............for instance, I asked one of the young guys working on our lighting crew, what lighting equipment would he buy next for this theatre, and he said "intelligents". we don't have enough instruments to light the actors across the entire stage, but we could do a rock show. am i too conventional?
Explain to him there's no such thing as "intelligent lights". Programmers/BoardOps want obedient lights--we'll provide the intelligence. We highly endorse The Gafftaper Method around here, especially for educational and community theatres. I'm currently on a crusade to convince these theatres (and almost every else) to rent moving lights when they need them, don't buy them....for instance, I asked one of the young guys working on our lighting crew, what lighting equipment would he buy next for this theatre, and he said "intelligents"...

Whomever you're speaking to, our theater listened and decided that additional body mics and new sub woofers would be better than a moving mirror, robotic, whatever... We're also looking at new box office software. There's always something to spend money on.
jneveaux - I'm right there with you. I even predated Rosco. We still were actually using real 'gels' when I started. Those things were so fragile! Our theater had about five lights, but you could only turn three of them on at a time or you'd overload the system...ah, the 'good' old days.
I work in a small community theater as well and have to admit that it's a realy change of pace. Are you having fun? that's the important thing!
Char5lie: Real gels! Did anyone ever ask you to take them to the sink and wash them? That used to be a favorite "dirty trick" to play on a newbie. Community theatre is fun, but I have to relearn to keep things in perspective. Seeing how some things are done raises the hair on the back of my neck.

Ooo, was that you who did that to me? I about wet my pants when that happened. Then to turn around and see everyone laughing, oh man, I was hot!
It's still hard for me to differentiate between community and educational theater at times. At the school, we had top-of-the-line lighting and sound equipment, more lights than we knew what to do with (I mean there was an entire room, the width and berth of the stage deck) of light storage and that didn't count the stuff hanging. At SCT, we have about five extra lights in 'storage'. Four body mics, a sound system from the 70's and lots of willing but untrained volunteers who still having gotten the word that you don't wrap cable around your arm!
Still it's a lot more low key and there's tons less stress than ed theater. When all is said and done, I wouldn't go back.
They're trying to develop powered flying gaffers tape. gafftaper is Orville and gafftapegreenia is Wilbur....People have taken to calling us "the gaff brothers".
