    Making it interesting

i've definitely been there - tired of watching & being engaged with a show after seeing it what seems like 14 million times, but it is important to ALWAYS stay engaged. Mixing is sorta like driving - in order to be successful (and not crash and burn) the operator must be alert and know...

    Soundcheck

Well....it depends on the event. The typical concert (on the road)...{BEFORE PERFORMERS ARE PRESENT} 1. Turn everything ON (it's amazing how often this is missed) 2. Check all routing is correct w/CD 3. Check monitors/mains are working w/CD 4. Check mics are working {WITH PERFORMERS} 5...

    Singing and Microphones....Teaching it...

It has been a great help to me to be both a performer and technician. I've earned a lot of respect from the performers I work with because I'm able to approach them on their level. A technician is just as important as a performer, but you must remember that you're there to support the performer...

    Touring a show

basically, the way I understand the proposal is this...This would be a national (or international) tour of a production that is designed for students to participate. However, instead of coming in for just a few days, doing some neat little workshops, performing, and leaving - the production...

    Wireless Mic Software Idea

The idea is good, but personally, I wouldn't use it. If I'm MIXING...the last thing i want to do is take my hands off the board to type. Or off the stage to look at a screen. Also, most of the time(as a TD) i don't have my mixers on com. There is someone designated to sit there on script/com for...

    Hanging Microphones

All I've ever used for choir are AT hanging mics (not by choice - that's just what I had to work with). Placement ALWAYS bugged me with these cause they'd turn to the right or the left and be all weird. THEN...the guy who installed our new system taught me a trick...to make the head turn -...

    Colored Fog

So...I'm watching Spiderman. In one scene there is green colored fog. Anyone know how this can be achieved? I don't think it was lighting or cg.

    Video Editing and Publishing Software

Personally, I've used Pinacle & Premiere. Premiere was fine, but I had never ending problems with Pinacle. For the little bit i've done since I've gotten my Mac i've just used iMove. Our company will be starting an internship soon and each intern with a film-making will get a new mac with...

    Touring a show

Hey Arthur,I may be able to give you some advice or even join in, but I need more info. What do you want to do? what is the final goal? what is the professional aspect? what does the educational aspect involve? if you can share more examples about what you're thinking it'll help me help you...

    hanging mics

A common misconception is that shotgun mics can "reach" farther - when in reality this is not true. Using a shotgun mic for sound is like using a papertowel tube over a camera lense; it doesn't reach farther, but "spots" a certain area of sound and rejects sound coming from the sides and back...

    Lavliers/mic placement

I've used both the B3 and E6 for productions. When I'm singing or acting I prefer the E6 (cause it is lighter). As for make-up...depending on the actor's make-up, I'd prefer the mics on first. You can use techniques to preven the mic element from getting make-up in it.As for the cord breaking...

    hanging mic placement

do you have an eq on the mics other than a 3 or 4 band on the sound board? If not, I'd definitly suggest that you use a 31-band EQ inserted into the individual mic channels. You can also send them to a sub group and insert the eq there. (if your board has sub masters).

    war of the wireless

I just read yesterday that Congress is trying to pass through legislation that would push the FCC to open TV frequencies to unlicensed wireless devises (such as garage door openers, wireless phones, et cetera). They claim that these devises could utilize the "white space" between tv channels...

    internship program

hey all, I'm working on some new curriculum for an internship program and I need you help. I am looking for one (or two) good books on lighting that will cover basic techniques, color, yada yada yada for concert and theatrical lighting. The internship program does not focus on the...
