enjoyable historical fiction: Fools and Mortals by Bernard Cornwell

POSSIBLE SPOILERS: Didn't care for Cornwell's characterization of the Bard. (And I'm a HUGE fan of Sharpe's Rifles, so there you are.) And, he stretched a lot of history into unlikely ways. I just wonder whether Cornwell is an amateur thespian.Still, any book by Cornwell is a better read...

    Show Stop Stories

Just a few weeks ago, my wife and I were watching our son in one of his first Equity roles in George Bernard Shaw's Candida at a summer theatre near Ottawa. Ten minutes from the end, he suddenly fainted and went down hard, banging his head on a footstool. In seconds, two doctors and a nurse...

    Digital Script?

If you drop your paper script off the edge of the riser, you just have to pick it up and find your page. If you drop your e-script from the same spot, chances are you'll be buying a new digital device.Call me a dinosaur, but paper is still far better.

    Your first Memory Lighting Console

1982, a Strand Mantrix at a theatre in Toronto. Forgot which one.Arrived in a.m. to set up our show. Their lighting system was torn apart as new (BIG!) Mantrix board is coming in. Helped them set it up by noon. Programmed the show in p.m. (with cassette tape memory). Curtain time that...

    DIY Sound Absorption

We used Roxul Safe'N'Sound extensively in our theatre in Ontario. Excellent sound reduction and thermal insulation. But, it did need to be covered by a non-flammable material. Not sure why, as it has a flame-spread rating of zero. Hey, it's rock.We used double Roxul-filled walls with 3/4"...

Creative mic placement on a set

Hi, Alex:I was waiting for someone a little more knowledgeable about sound to chime in here, but no one has, so I'll toss in my two cents. My first thought is "how big is your stage if you had the audience on stage with the production and still felt you needed to mic the show?"My second...

I am looking for the Umbrella Rifle used in Virginia Woolf

Probably sacrilege, but we changed it to a very real looking, but shop-built, rubber-band powered unit that popped out a flag that said "Bang!" Equally effective, we thought, and much simpler.

    Theatre Traditions and Habits

Yelled "fire in the hole" once, heard no objections, test fired the prop gun and a second later, heard somebody say "Oh, that's what "fire in the hole" means. Scared the **** out of me!"

    Theatre Traditions and Habits

Don't know how many other places might do (or need) this, but we have developed a habit/tradition of yelling "House is clear?" before dousing the house lights on exiting the building for the day. We've had one or two people locked in over the years, so a final check helps.

    MOON ON THE CYC?

A line from Our Town: The Stage Manager walks onto the stage with a potted plant and puts it down. "There's some scenery for those who need scenery."
