VOLUNTEER: Church in Buffalo needs sound techs, will train.

This is not a paying gig, it's an open call for volunteers.I'm helping a small church in the Buffalo, NY area get started. They don't currently have anyone attending who's up for audio duties so for the foreseeable future I'm it which is fine. But I thought it would be an opportunity to hang...

Microphones Shotgun speaker? (opposite of shotgun microphone)

A while ago I read about the concept of a sound "laser" that would produce very narrow beams of audio for the purpose of kiosk advertising. The idea being that as people walk through a defined area they hear the ad but other people don't, keeping noise pollution down. The concept is similar to...

Safe to go digital on monitor desk?

I would agree with that, I always liked the big A&H desks or a Midas when I could be so lucky. I'll tell you though that six years ago when I saw the Vi6 when it was rolled out, it was the first digital desk that made sense to me. Everything is right there. It takes so little time to get...

Safe to go digital on monitor desk?

Take a look at the Soundcraft Vi series and the Midas Pro2. The Soundcraft is a dream to use and nobody is going to turn their nose up at it. It's also pretty easy to get acquainted with on short notice. The Midas is a small (tiny) footprint model at a lower price point but it's currently out...

Wireless Question regarding Log-Periodic Dipole Array/ Sharkfin

Unless you're right at the fringe of reception or in an incredibly dense RF environment like a football stadium in a large city you don't need two. The receivers these days are diversity which means there are two in each box and a circuit votes on which one to use. If one antenna is a paddle and...

Sound System Design for New Black Box Theater

Make sure your paging system is well thought out. Make sure you don't hang speakers from sprinkler pipes. Make sure you install twice as much speaker as you think you'll need. Make sure your amps are twice as big again as that. Buy twice the mixer you think you'll need. Get a good system processor.

Device to scan and display RF in an area?

Find a ham radio operator in the area and borrow their scanner. A good one will let you sweep the spectrum continuously and with the squelch turned way down you might catch an issue. The problem with most scanners is that they're FM only or if they do have AM it's only enabled for broadcast and...

Omnidirectional headworn mic: worthwhile for theater use? (A-T BP892)

I like the Shure WL93 element myself. It doesn't come with any rigging other than a tie clip which I usually throw out and use bobby pins to put in the actors' hair. I see people use these all the time and try to tape them to the actors' faces because they've seen the Countryman before. The...

Hairline WL93 mics ok until there's 4 or 5 actors. SUggestions?

I've use the 93s almost exclusively for years. At times I've had over two dozen on stage at once with no trouble. The key is spending some good time with them while you're tuning up the system. If you've got some of those and the rest are another type it's a good idea to bus all the 93s to a...

Do you use an RTA as a visual aide for teaching EQ'ing?

My FOH EQ has an RTA in it that I've always used to back up my ears in pressure situations. I also use it after EQing the room to see if I missed anything or over shot. It's a great tool for training your ears but don't lean on it too much. Most that you find, on phones or even in gear don't...

    Mixing for LCR+S

It would help to know what desk you're borrowing to mix on. Does it have built in facilities to make LCR mixing a snap or will you have to fake it with an aux bus?

Blog Post I Wrote About Mixing In The Theatre

I suggested going to the graphs because in my experience, using a dozen or two dozen of the same model of mic, you tend to see each and every channel strip with the same corrective EQ and nothing left to get artistic with. If not the house then inserting one on the groups, I can tuck that into...

Blog Post I Wrote About Mixing In The Theatre

I didn't come here to advertise my blog, this is humbly submitted for review and commentary and to get discussion started. I started up a pro audio blog to help teach the volunteers at the church where I work. It's taken off a bit so instead of trying to think of topics to write on every day I'm...

    Microphones Mics for naked people

Samson made a mic that was just worn over the ear. Saw some at a tour stop last year. Not sure how well they'd hold up to stage singers though. The MC was distorting his pretty badly but that could have been the house tech who was mixing him from a remote station or the mics themselves.
