Conventional Fixtures Safety Cabling Top Hats/Barndoors

1/16" GAC, swaged to the accessory (drill a hole if you have to) at one end with a quick-link or dog clip at the other end. That's how we've done it here at our large Las Vegas show with every gel frame/pattern holder/barn door/top hat/twin spin, etc. and we have over 3400 fixtures! Learning to...

Need some advice on new console used for concert busking .

Avo's tend to be the affordable go-to for busking. I know people who are fans of the Martin M1 or M2GO, which are both less expensive than say a Hog or MA.

    Vintage Lighting Strand Patt23

I believe PRG has some 123's sitting in Vegas or LA. They were used on a James Taylor/Carole King tour a few years ago.

Studio Spot 250 vs MAC 250E

I've used them both, and they're both very good lights. The Entours will give you more reliability, as they're a much newer light (the Studio Spot 250s are a discontinued item). The iris can be a good selling point.

Need help/advice on building a little rig...

Since we're only talking about a club-size rig, your thoughts on fixtures look very good. Look into auctioned equipment from major companies. For example, a lot of gear is retired after going out from a shop on a multi-year lease. I know PRG (www.prg.com) auctions gear off occasionally, as do...

    Favorite Gobo Rotator?

I'm a big fan of GAM. Any of their gear works well, and I know guys who have worked in the GAM labs testing the gear. It's very reliable. They also have the film efx, which are cool.

    Haze Issues

The MDG is by far my favorite hazer on the market. Have it serviced by a qualified tech. Any piece of equipment, especially one where there are moving parts, is going to break down eventually. It probably needs a good cleaning.

    Leaving Lights Outside?

Those are all pretty hardy lights. Out in the rain I don't know about though. I hope they're tarped over. Ditto on keeping the elec. connections water tight. I know you're not working the show, but watch out for cable wear as a result of the show conditions. I'm not at all worried about the...

    Coolest show you've ever managed

    Follow Spot Cues

As a lighting designer, I like to give my spot ops their cues ahead of time and not have to worrow about calling them. As SM, there are enough things to call. On my current production of Les Mis there are 105 spot cues, 225 light cues, and a whole bunch of shifts backstage. The SM wouldn't be...

    Fire procedure

Please consult your local fire marshall. In many places, disabling a fire detection system is illegal.

    Lighting T-Shirt

Some of the swag out there is actually pretty good (and free if you ask nicely). My favorite is my shirt from Vari-lite "Life is a freakshow We just do the lighting"

LightBoard for Just a Few Moving Instruments

Unless you have any experience with Hog, I would reccomend against trying to learn it in a production environment. The syntax of your strand board probably mirrors an etc. If you just have a few intelligent devices and you're not doing too many effect cues, an ETC Expression 3 or ETC Insight...

    Flashlights

Maglite 2AA when I don't care about batteries and the work is close up. Otherwise, Surefire 6P Incandescent for long throw stuff.
