    amps, speakers, impedance

Cool, thanks! I'm looking at a datasheet for a QSC amp and it's saying that it'll put 300 watts into an 8 ohm load, but only 500 into a 4 ohm load. Is all of the 100 watt difference from the expected 600 watts due to the inductive nature of the load?

    amps, speakers, impedance

heya, got a question for ya Lets say I have a two-channel amp that puts out 300 watts into a 4 ohm load on each channel. If I had an 8-ohm speaker going into each channel, each speaker would be receiving 150 watts? If I instead wired both 8 ohm speakers in parallel (creating a 4-ohm...

    fun with speakers!

I'm not sure I'd want to use XLR cable for speakers... It would be rather unfortunate if someone besides me had decided to plug a microphone into the other end of an amplified current carrying XLR cable. Are the conductors inside of them even rated for carrying that much current?

Be careful around a hot mic

wow, that is kind of weird, heh. Eh, I guess our mistake was just kind of funny for those in the house, nobody really cared, but we're still going to be a bit more careful with the mic ;)

Be careful around a hot mic

So a friend and I were up in the soundbooth during a rehersal for our musical Grease, and we're looking on a list calling individual people over the talkback mic onto stage to test their mics and figgure out which receiver they were going through. However, I'm not exactly sure how this happened...

    Rauland PR 1604 Amp

Is the circuit breaker you're speaking of the internal protection mechanism inside the amp preventing it from turning on? If so, then either something inside of it has fried or short circuited, or something between the speakers and the amp is shorting. If you're talking about the circuit...

Curious things I see that keeps the job interesting

Laptop powered by a dimmer. I was in the soundbooth and it was on stage facing the other way so I couldn't see if it was running.. or on fire..

    Pocket PC

About the only theatrical uses I could imagine for a pocket PC would be for using wireless remote focus software (ETC makes this I belive), or acrobat reader for reading PDF equipment manuals. I would not run any sound cues off a pocket PC because it's internal sound card will most likely not...

    Into the Woods

Ambient sounds are pretty fun to work with! When I designed sound for our production of Macbeth, our director wanted a stormy creepy outdoors type ambience for the witch scenes, so I found different thunder and wind samples, and sequenced it into a surround sound track in Adobe Audition, then...

HELP! I need a quick fix!

I've never used a Lehigh Millenium board, so I'm not sure if this will work -- but do you have a dimmer check button/function on the board? On other boards, you can test an individual dimmer by typing 'Dimmer 52 at 100' or similar. When you say 52 goes to 98/99%, does the screen (I'm...

    "Burning in?"

What type of followspot was it? Some types of followspots use high intensity discharge lamps that operate by passing current at a high voltage through an inert gas and sometimes a vaporised metal halide. These types of lamps do need to be 'burned in' to help distribute the metal halide evenly...
