The fixture shows no error messages, and we have tried calibrating the iris at the fixture. The iris opens and closes properly when calibrating but closes up afterwards. Directly controlling the dmx address does not adjust the iris, and repatching the fixture does not work either.

I do not have experience with the d-pro software, but submasters seem like the way to go for setting up scenes for static intensity only looks. It may be a good idea to set moving light looks or palettes on the buttons, since setting non-intensity values on submasters may get a bit tricky.
If you have a computer nearby, you could try hooking up the element to the computer via a USB to midi cable, then send Midi Show Control commands to the console from something like Qlab.
It is working well. The geometry and arena shape is something I have yet to wrap my head around yet, but there have been many successful shows and performances put on in the arena.
