Coming to the conclusion the tech has moved beyond my ability to keep up...

Bad news; keeping up with technology never ends. But the good news is that the Ion is ETC gear and they have some terrific free training videos online. Familiarize yourself with it and I promise you'll never want to go back. The second part of your frustration seems to stem from problems that...

    Painting FOH Bulbs

No, I don't know of any kind of coating you can apply to the lamp to accomplish this. But as almorton says there are gels specifically for this, called CTO (color temperature orange). They come in a range; 1/4 CTO, 1/2 CTO, and full CTO. Gel is cheap, I would get one of each and experiment...

Advice on Lighting- Starting from Scratch

You might talk to Vincent Lighting, in Erlanger. I lean toward renting, mostly because 7 years is an awfully long time in this industry. Whatever you buy today, something better and cheaper will be available in 7 years. And if you're only going to use this for a week once a year, 7 years...

Materials Needed to Rig Tennis Balls Dropping

    What should they know?

It's a small world. Don't treat anybody like crap; in ten years you might be working with (or for!) them again.

NPR explores the growing culture wars over high school theatre

This school district is right in our back yard and we know these folks. This is all the result of a VERY few extremist snowflakes.Whatever you think about the politics (and boy do I think plenty) these are real people who's lives are a living hell because of this. They signed up to help...

    Assembling a 9 x 6.5 flat with braces

There's more than one style of flat, tell us a little more. Does it stand on stage and never move? Does it tour? Does it have to stand up to...whatever, or just look pretty? For a couple of hours or a couple of years?

Traveler Track Hand Line takes a TON of force to pull

Do you have neoprene carriers? If you do, you need #1726 rubber spacers between them. Otherwise the wheels can contact each other and lock up. I'd be more confident in this diagnosis if it didn't work better before you swapped the master carriers.

Traveler Track Hand Line takes a TON of force to pull

There's such a thing a too much tension on the line. If this is hanging on a counterweight set, bring it in a bit and try it. Or if it's dead-hung but has an adjustable floor pulley, put a little slack in the line.

    LED Followspot

Mega Systems make a couple of LED follow spots that are well within your budget, are probably bright enough for what you're doing, and are available for immediate shipment.

VL 2500 Lamps hard to find

Not discontinued, Vincent Lighting has 14 of the Philips on the shelf and can get more. But you're right, they're pricey.

LED screw-in replacements dimmable with decent curve??

We've had pretty good luck with TCP (Technical Consumer Products). They make both dimmable and non-dimmable, so you have to be careful which you're buying, but the dimmables dim pretty well. Obviously, try a few on your dimmers before you invest in a hundred.

    LED ERS opinions

I doubt if you'll feel like you need incandescent fill to get good skin tones from the Series 3, they're very good in that regard.

Printed pattern projection through LED SRC4

If you only need one, it's almost not worth the hassle of doing it yourself. Both Apollo and Rosco now will make you a full-color custom plastic gobo for less than the cost of a custom metal gobo.

    Stage Revolve help!

Caster wear is the least of your worries. The real advantage to face-up is that every stray screw and nail that inevitably finds its way under the turntable is not an accidental brake.
