The only thing I can think of that would be a somewhat safe way they could have wired the system is that instead of bringing in three phase power they ran three 120V lines that were all the same phase. This would be safe (not necessarily for the equipment, shouldn't cause a fire though) to do...

I was basing it off of a linear relationship, so yes I definitely think it is possible (I did before but after doing some calculations thought I must have been wrong about it being possible)

If you have a 400w at 8 ohm amp does it put out 400w or 200w at 16 ohms (is there a point where the output stabilizes?) Human skin typically has a resistance of 1,000 to 100,000 ohms. I think 1,000 is wet and 100,000 is dry although it may be lower for wet. So unless you have broken/burnt...

Probably cost. It is a church camp and they had just spent a ton of money building the building. Also, with the abuse that the system takes (along with everything else in the building) cheap, easy to fix/diagnose is a pretty smart choice.... In one case someone dragged out a 42U high plywood...

I know all the things that would improve the system, the problem is convincing the people who are paying for the equipment that it is necessary when they have been using the system like this for the last few years. I forget the exact models on the speakers and I will try and get them next...

Right now a system I work with (did not design) has the main speakers and subwoofers on one channel of the amplifier. Both cabinets are rated at 8 ohms and, I believe, 500 watts program 1000 watts peak and they are connected in parallel. At 4 ohms the amplifier is rated at 600-700 watts RMS...

So the big thing is to keep in mind that you don't put more than 80% x 10k watts combined worth the dimmer packs on a circuit/main breaker that is rated for 10k watts (I know the rating is in amps but I figured for this discussion taking voltage/amperage into account isn't as big of a deal)
