    Electric work

If you are talking about wiring into a distribution pannel with bare wire or camlock connectors, then no you dont have to be a licensed electrician, but it does (at least in maryland) have to be inspected by an electrician. I would highly suggest getting one to do it though... most of those...

    $3-4k lighting console

The strand 300 series has almost limetless ability for adding more submaster pannels. Each pannel has 24 subs on it. I am currently in charge of a board with 5 of these pannels, a total of 120 submasters... pre-program a bunch of presets for your movers or even full cues into these submasters...

    Lighting tutorials and systems

Have to agree... be careful before buying more shakespeares. Make sure you give other lights a fair look first. IMHO, Shakespeares just dont hold a candle to other modern ERS lights such as the Source 4's or even the Strand SL's. You get very little intensity "bang-for-your-buck" compared to...

    cyc options

I was going to suggest rose brand 16oz. velour or commando cloth, but muslin is definitely the cheeper of the options. Just make sure you get heavy weight so the drop will actually look like it has some substance to it.

    Plots and Hots

Eh, not a slap... just a gentle prod. I understand you though... i have yet to drop the cash for a nice pair of mechanics gloves so that i can actually have enough dextarity when gloved to work without fumbling things. I just recently brought my own self back into reality by torching myself on...

    Lighting Design work

Look for summer stock jobs. There is a publication called Art Search that has tons of listings for summer stock... also take a look at www.backstagejobs.com Also, be ready to hump lights first. Designers frequently start out working for F-R-E-E until they can prove to people that they are...

    Plots and Hots

Source 4's are typically standard these days. great optics, good color temp, hight quality build. Personally, I would not decide which light you get based on how hot it gets... unless, that is, you are using it as a followspot. If a light gets too hot during a focus call, get some gloves...

    Source for gels?

Actually, steel blue wont give you a black light look. Depending on what you are trying to achieve, it is a very good cool, ever so slightly greenish front light color. Stanley McCandless (Extremly famous lighting designer from days of yore, developer of the McCandless 5 point lighting method)...

Thanks for the clarifications there John, probably should have let you field this one from the start

    Source for gels?

If you dont have a thatrical supply store near you, i would try Barbizon.com or Lighttrader.com. but in all honesty, you should be able to do a google search and come up with hundreds of places that have what you need online. Because you didnt mention it, you may need to know a color code...

    Multiplex?

Unfortunately, DMX and Multiplex are completely incompatible without the translator. Basically, DMX is an industry standard data protocol that is maintained by a USITT standard. Multiplex is a prorietary protocol for most NSI gear... All of their old gear runs on Multiplex, but some of their...

    Strand Offline Editor?

Hey! I was right! :P Thanks for confirming what I thought i had heard once. But once again, no dice on XP since Gates thought it was finally time to put DOS to bed once and for all.

    Strand Offline Editor?

I think that as long as you are not running a winXP, mac, or *nix machine (IE anything with DOS still part of it), you can just install teh console software on your machine and it will act as standalone software. Please dont take my word for this though. I am not positive if this works...
