we always kept a towel and rubbing alcohol available backstage. Whenever there was time to do so (black-out, scene change, etc.) we'd quickly wipe over the area.

You could do that shadow play business like in Wicked. Like have the Witch step behind a white curtain, back light it and have her pretend to melt and once you think the audience is satisfied with the effect, kill the light, have the witch run off stage but leaver her hat, cloak, and broomstick.

I found out about the site by doing some internet searchs about how to acheive certain special effects in theater and this site was the best by far
