Have you Experienced Snobbery Against Spectacle?

I have actually experienced snobbery about the fact that I love to design musicals and don't mind designing for amateurs. I made a name for myself lighting serious drama and Shakespeare but really enjoy doing musicals, because I can be playful as well as dramatic. I get the feeling that musicals...

    Questionable traditions in educational theatre.

Very cool. On a totally different subject, one Pantomime I worked in the UK gave away bright pink plastic umbrellas during the audience iparticipation sequence. They seriously over ordered the umbrellas and despite almost every kid in the audience on the last night leaving with one we still had...

    Questionable traditions in educational theatre.

Lo these many years ago I took over as Production Manager with a small pro theatre co that had a strong tradition of "pranks" on matinees. I hated it. The audience deserve the best possible performance and if you are worrying about whats going to happen to you if you open that drawer they ain't...

Sign silhouette - gobo or projector?

A bit off topic. Back in the late 1990's when I was working in the UK I lit a Production of "Playing for Time". Its an Arthur Miller play set in a concentration camp. We built a set with wire mes walls barbed wire and spotlights and I had exactly the same bright idea. I ordered two gobo's from a...

A Mushroom Cloud to "wow the audience"

Yeah, its fun. I got the idea indirectly from an elderly man who was a good friend who introduced his wife (his only wife of 50 years) as "This is my first wife Pauline."

A Mushroom Cloud to "wow the audience"

My lovely ex fiancee created exactly this for a shadow puppet 3D show back about 5 years. The difference was that it was for three weeks and she used a cardbard box rather than a plastic bin and operated the membrane by hand. Worked like a dream in a shadow puppet show. (Much smaller scale of...

    Calling a Musical

Yeah, like kiwitechgirl says. Try Opera. You have to call from the score. Its fun. At one theate I worked at we had a young man who was called Luke score reader who called most of our opras. He was a trained classical trumpeter but had moved to the dark side.

    Lighting for Puppets

15 minutes is a bit slow Chris. I reckon I could change a plug in less than 10 more likely 5. Derek, there are some photo's on the Lighting page of my website. Tony Moore We had a front gauze as we were also projecting frames.

    Lighting for Puppets

I've just come back to CB after a gap of maybe two years and dvsDave asked me a question about the puppetry work I've been doing. Here's a description. Actually if anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them as I am new to this and still exploring. The first type of production I've been...

    Hi There

I thought like Hughsie that I'd reintroduce myself. I haven't actually posted on here for nearly 2 years though. I'm still semi retired and mainly working on small scale stuff with a collection of my own gear, although I am working a fair bit with a Japanese Theatre Company out of Osaka. I...

    Greetings

Gudday Techman. I'm an old timer like you and also learned on one of the old upright boards. I haven't been around much for a while but have just started again. The Booth is a great place to share. Answer the questions you can and don't be afraid to ask. The only stupid question is the one you...

Bubbles. . .A fun effect? or a Death Trap!

I have a couple of real cheap plastic machines. They cost about $A20.00 and last me about 6 months at the kids parties and so on I do sometimes. I once had someone ask if I could make bubbles fluorescent. I know you can buy fluorescent bubble mix but couldn't find any. Someone suggested we...
