Understanding Specifics of the DMX512 Protocol [Newbie Nate's Question of the Day]

Thanks @DrewE for the excellent supplemental information. I wasn't offered a comparison to RS-422 in the course, and that actually provides additional understanding to why a 5-pin connection was chosen. Thank you for the correction in terminology as well, I should probably be careful calling...

Understanding Specifics of the DMX512 Protocol [Newbie Nate's Question of the Day]

I feel rather very silly not having considering that. I suppose I've never contemplated using mic cable as DMX cable, but I know that's been a hot debate. Must have slipped my mind. So it's merely a situation of establishing identity of the cable, and that makes sense. Apologies for...

Understanding Specifics of the DMX512 Protocol [Newbie Nate's Question of the Day]

That's an intimidating amount of information. I'll roll up my sleeves and get my eSet dictionary ready. I've got time, so no reason not to fascinate myself with this.I hadn't thought of it in a raw power scenario; it makes sense that in the absence of a signal, signal can be inserted where...

Understanding Specifics of the DMX512 Protocol [Newbie Nate's Question of the Day]

Touche! I had searched the site vaguely but not dug too hard. That's on me.Oh! Fascinating, didn't even know a fractional load was possible. My EE/CE background is really weak here. How does one know that a device has a fractional load transceiver? Os is it assumed to be the standard...

    Rolled Gel

Something I've done:I've noticed gel changes its memory a bit better when warm. So I grabbed my rolls, placed them in between sheets of heavy opaque plastic that I had lying around, and put them outside in the winter sun, making sure that no portion of the gel was directly exposed to...

Understanding Specifics of the DMX512 Protocol [Newbie Nate's Question of the Day]

Morning, CB!Time for another NNQotD! Thanks to recent joblessness, I've been recently taking a signals course from ETC that goes into detail re: the DMX-512a protocol, and I have a few rather practical questions. No need to answer them all at once, since I have quite a few, and have all the...

    Cell phone for intercom

Discord? I know it’s “intended for gaming,” but it has tremendous API capability and you can set permissions, god mic settings, etc. Teamspeak is also a great option but requires more bandwidth.I have used Discord and Bluetooth in-ears to work a few loud volunteer gigs, with great success...

Join us in April for USITT 2020!

I am excited but also not excited. I’m excited because yay USITT! I’m not excited because the bar tab for the amount of mentorship I’ve gotten since USITT19 has become rather intimidating. o_O Don’t worry, I’m good for it. ;)

Another - no. 4 of 6 currently in Mississippi

Newbie Nate Question Time: I’m noticing the acoustical paneling going in there: Are the locations chosen for the acoustic paneling coincident with the HVAC and catwalks intentionally? To avoid reflection I presume? Audio is not my expertise, so I’ve always wondered how the location was chosen.

    A fun view.....

I’m sorry, I can’t hear you over the sound of my TD having a seizure. I’d better go check to see if he’s all right, since the department accountant is making similar sounds.............

    A fun view.....

I've gotta get my department at my university one of those... we have an athletics director who's just a little on edge whenever something that isn't wrapped in bubble wrap touches his floor. Now, I understand that the flooring is quite expensive and hard to fix (so he tells me), but if it's...

    Umbrella gun

Actually, I'm no expert. I was merely trying to get a better feel for the qualifying questions before I offered ideas. Because, while I could throw 100 possible solutions at you, I figured I'd ask for some guidelines first, and then narrow solutions to those that fit your options. I apologize...

Essential things to know when starting out in lighting

Absolutely this ^^^^^^^^^^^^^. Good habits are hard to beat, and bad habits are hard to break. Knowing industry standards, accepted practices, best practices, all make for better technical work. Also, I was once wisely told that "you must know the rules in order to break them."
