    Ham Radio for Communication?

I thought I would comment since I am both an active ham radio operator (w8nwo is my callsign) and MURS user. First, as others have pointed out, everyone who might want to use a ham radio would have to obtain a ham license (after doing some studying and passing a test). The tests aren't too...

Colortran i24 rack is not dimming

Do you also have a Lumanet system connected to this rack? If so, it can do goofy things on occasion.

    What on earth?

Can you get a better photo of the box above the cage that has the two meters? I'd bet that's part of the battery charging circuit.

    What on earth?

Can't say what the cage is, though based on the connections; sure looks like a battery bank. All I know is if that system has puppies, I want one!

    Save Tungsten Campaign

Is there any way to expand the exemption for theatrical lamps to other lamps often used in theater but not considered theatrical lamps? I'm thinking general service lamps between 40 and 100 watts. Is there any way to to continue manufacturing and selling those lamps so long as they are...

    Musician severely shocked by microphone.

Okay. so why are the ceramic death caps installed in the first place? They are WAY too small for any kind of ripple filtering. I always assumed they shorted RF to ground to reduce the chance of radio interference. I now understand the importance of removing them, but I'm wondering what the...

    Musician severely shocked by microphone.

So help me understand the death cap issue a little better. What kind of caps are we talking about? Electrolytic or ceramic disc? I've often seen ceramic disc caps connected from line directly to chassis in older equipment. I've never heard of one shorting out, but I suppose it is possible. If it...

FLE Lamp Failure - What Causes This?

Thanks for the replies. I intend to send it back; I just wanted to see what I could learn about the problem before I return it. I'll check the spot over closely before we use it again. I don't recall that the Super Clubspot has much for airflow. I don't think they even have a fan, but off the...

FLE Lamp Failure - What Causes This?

Last weekend I installed a new Osram FLE halogen lamp in one of our Lycian Super Clubspots only to have it go out minutes later. When I removed the lamp, this is what I found:I did not touch (though I did not clean) the capsule. I was not the followspot operator so I'm not positive how long...

    What Is It #1984v2.1Beta

I always assumed that the 45 degree splice in audio tape was to reduce the chance for an audible "pop" at the splice. I was talking to a friend of mine from the broadcast industry and he said that he was taught to cut at 45 degrees so the splice was stronger (going along with what Brad said).

    What Is It #1984v2.1Beta

My thought behind the 80(?) degree miter is this: In quadruplex recording on 2" tape, video tracks are nearly perpendicular to the tape, (not quite 90 degrees). Therefore, if making a splice in 2" tape, it seems like you would need to cut at the same angle as the video tracks. Otherwise you...

    What Is It #1984v2.1Beta

I'll be careful how much I say since I'm not a student, but my audio tape splicing blocks only have two blade grooves; one at 90 and one at 45(?) degrees. Since this has three, I don't necessarily think it is for audio tape, at least not for 1/4" tape. Though I'm only 24, I work with old media...

I want to teach my son how to solder.

You could try it and see, though it probably won't work as well as you would like. I don't use lead-free solder, but I sometimes desolder equipment that was soldered with lead-free solder. When I do, I use an 800 degree tip in my Weller soldering station. Otherwise I would use a 700 degree tip...

When the fire alarm is going off...

I've witnessed several fire alarm activations (all false alarms) at the school where I work. People don't leave, simple as that. Students usually will leave, especially if they are in class. The teachers are great about initiating an orderly evacuation. However, if its after hours (and...
