I think that you're ion receive channel and transmit channel should be different and then in your MSC cue your device ID should match the ID of your ion MSC receive channel.I have more info at home and i'll look it up when i get home.Best of luck.
I've found in my travels that sometimes ins go to outs and sometimes ins go to ins.
Also you say that you've set your expression up to have channel 1 as a receiving address so Qlab should send to channel 1.

In either version of Qlab there is a master fader for the over all output.
Go to your sound patch and click edit device on the device that you're using as your output. In there you'll find a master fader. Bump it up or down as needed... it works differently depending on the version...
