    Tarping at an outdoor gig

We all know Murphy's Law rules, right? If we prepare for the worst, it probably won't happen, but if we say, "Nah, forget about that safety chain, those clamps are brand new" or anything along those lines, the lamps will inevitebly fall. Anyway, the company I was working for at the time of...

    Distro...Sortof

A 50amp range plug is essentially a stove plug, however, electrical codes for wire gauge are more strict on portable distro's than on installed appliances (at least thats what I've found up here in Canada). The thing about cams (once again, here in canada) is that when you tie in with cams...

    Distro...Sortof

I know alot of soundco's in my area that use 50amp range plugs on their distros. Obviously the safety of camlock isn't there, but if there is someone hanging around your distro that doesn't know what they're doing, that should be a matter for Security, not you. As well, even 5 feet of 2 or 4...

    Intermittent low frequency buzz

Loose ground wire in-line with a LF/sub driver? That could explain the intermittentcy of the hum. If it didn't get jostled then it wouldn't be a problem, but the minute somebody touches and amp/processor/etc.. with the bad wire it'll start to go.

    A Microphone Rental Query

A 57 on a guitar amp is pretty standard, I don't see why you'd need to rent a condenser for it, unless it's an acoustic without a pickup. As for the bass, DI it with a passive box, it'll sound better than if you mic the cab (imho anyway) and you keep an active mic off stage which increases your...

    Best way of micing actors

For the last production I did we rented a couple Sennheiser broadway series mics and hooked them into our belt packs. Essentially they're a mic about as thin as a couple strands of hair, coloured beige and are stiff with an ear mould that fits pretty snug. For the rest of the actors the belt...

    FOH vs. Monitors

Prestigious, I'd say FOH. He/She is the person that the audience sees, they're the one who everyone looks to to make it sound good. However, the Monitor Tech, especially at festival gigs rather than touring has the harder job. FOH is actually pretty easy, but it's the Monitor guy who has to...

    An ethics question

The last company I worked for charged the client $35/hr for me to be there, with overtime as required. They payed me $9.30/hr for one year then a raise to $11.30 the next. They were making over $20/hr on my time. As well, the client was charged a minimum call of 4 hours, but the most I could...

Which speaker is loudest... a test.

Bet you anything if you put an A weight filter on your instrument the measurements would start to get closer to one another. I realize this doesn't have much to do with a straight comparison, but it's important when measuring which one is louder to human ears.

    Speakers

I'd have to say I'm a JBL fan. The VerTec array sounds great, and with the addition of the 4888DP (DrivePack, or powered Line Array Speaker) the portability and ease of use of the system is beyone compare. Simple rigging architecture makes it a breeze to fly, I can't really say enough about...

    Let's see...tin cans, a cardboard box, and a suitcase...

Even with the subs split L/R and stacked under the array I still usually end up delaying them a few ms anyway, occasionally I try shading them as well but thats another subject. 800 on the SAT, If I knew what that meant I geuss I'd be impressed :D

    Let's see...tin cans, a cardboard box, and a suitcase...

Being a concert tech myself, rather than a theatre tech, I can appreciate what you're saying about having your subs clustered in the center. I might even go so far as to say thats a wet dream of mine. I've never had an opportunity to implement that idea myself, but one of these days I'll try...

    Let's see...tin cans, a cardboard box, and a suitcase...

Best way to understand phase is grab a system thats got a good stack of bass bins (half on the left, half on the right) and put on a cd thats heavy on the bass end. Walk from one side of the room to the other listening to the bass. If you can't hear the acoustic phase shift...

    soundcraft series 2

I can't see why a school would need an 8 aux/bus console. Most schools I've seen perform absolutely fine with a 6 aux, 4 bus board. Though if it's cheap, Soundcraft is always a good choice.

    fuses blow

Good idea to shut off the power amps for your speakers before flipping any breakers back on.
