Rip Van Winkle

The TL;DR summary is: former sound guy (with a special interest in auditory processing disorders and acoustics, and how research can be applied to theater) trying to help out his kids’ school, incredibly grateful for the advice and dialogue of the ControlBooth community!

Another important note (a little bit of search engine optimization on my part): I’m working with a school for kids with language-based learning differences (like dyslexia & certain kinds of ADHD, for instance). As a sound person with an academic research background, I have taken a particular interest in how my skill set can benefit these kids. If you have experience to share, or can point me towards research that might be helpful, with using theater arts & technology to support and improve education — both on stage and in the classroom — in the areas of speech & language therapy/remediation, improving attention & focus outcomes, or auditory processing disorders (APD’s) — especially if you happen to be in the Philadelphia area! — please DM me!

I worked for many years in different areas of the music & audio industry, starting in earnest around 1990, and including about a decade of sound for theater in Philadelphia and vicinity: medium non-union houses (anywhere from 400-1300 seats), lots of site-specific and fringe-type productions, college & education programs, A2, A1, design…

I loved the work, took it seriously, and I think I was pretty good at it, but for a variety of reasons — good reasons, but too boring to go into here — my last gig was probably 20 years ago. Now I have kids; their school’s performing arts program/sound is in dire straits, and I have jumped in to help.

Aside from the obvious chronological gap in my knowledge, there are some challenges that are brand new to me: I’ve never worked in a gymnatorium; I’ve never worked in any (permanent) theater with only dead-hung battens; I’ve never done a musical without live accompaniment; the fairly young facility has never had the benefit of so much as a de facto TD, and has quickly devolved into chaos backstage.

As I dip a toe back into the field, I’m grateful to have a forum like ControlBooth for support. If you’ve read this far, thank you for your attention. Over the years, I’ve poked around the forums out of curiosity, and have always admired the civility and generosity of the ControlBooth community. I wish I had more to offer, but hope that at least my questions provide useful and enjoyable conversation amongst the experts. Thank you!
