Can Footer or someone elaborate on what he means by "Hard transitions to another part of the stage with tight specials and tight blocking." As in have the other actors stay on the stage and just switch the focus of the lighting to them?

We have a show coming up which contains a series of 16 monologues after each other each separated by blackouts. This looks a bit boring and the director is worried that the audience will lose focus between them. Any ideas other than the bog-standard blackout to either hold attention or vary...
