    Theatre Superstitions

Interesting that you didn't call out any of the other nine thousand people in this thread who cited whistling in a theatre as a superstition. Superstition, tradition--I don't care. I was merely telling a story that seemed to pertain to what this thread was intended to discuss.

    Theatre Superstitions

Well, I'm not much for superstitions, other than the "M" word, but last week, I think I may have gained myself a new one. I'm not really one for whistling usually, I'm more of a hummer for the most part, but on this particular day I had pantomimed stealing a sardine from the set, and thus...

That's the tool of which I was speaking! I've never heard it referred to as anything but a church key, which I find strange since those tools are quite obviously NOT the same thing.

Thank you very much for the advice--at some point I would definitely like to go back to school, certainly, though at this time that's not possible. I do, actually, have a particular field in mind, already; I would love to design for live theatre. I can't tell you how many scripts I've purchased...

Darn, I wish to heck that that was a feasible option for me; however, I do have friends down there, though, and I could ask them if they're looking for work in that field. I know of one who almost definitely would like to, in fact. What positions other than lighting crew are open, are there any?

hahaha okay, sounds good to me! And in regards to the other posts, I don't mind how long it takes, I just want to do it. Does anyone know where it is that I can get some literature on lighting design, start teaching myself, a little? What am I talking about, I'm sure you do, but can any one TELL...

four or five day work/school week

Myself, I figure I'd prefer the 4 days on, three days off method, although I don't think I ever had as little as forty hours of strictly tech work and got all I wanted done. While I was in school, I was working about 60-65 hours a week and still had to go to five other classes every weekday...

It pays to be a stagehand...

I think 300k/year is fair to expect someone to put up with slave-like amounts of hours, verbal abuse, and social suicide. If anything, it's a little on the cheap side. They're also forgetting to mention the people who make 20k-30k/year working those same hours, though.

Thank both of you for your suggestions, those really may help me out. Although I'd love to pursue formal education where technical theatre is concerned, money is pretty tight in my current situation, so I'm not sure if that's possible at this juncture. It's odd that they offer classes over...

What do you do when a director wants to be in the booth?

I've never had to encounter such a problem, because (a) both of the directors that I had almost NEVER went up there and (b) our booth was tremendously large and fit about ninety million people comfortably. As unprofessional as this may sound, we actually had our friends up there during shows...

Hey, my name's Alicia, and I was, a few years ago, The LD at my high school, though I believe I was hideously under-trained for the position, lol. We didn't have a tech teacher and the previous LD dropped out without training a replacement, so I suppose that well may have had something to do...

    Senior Technicians/Stagehands and Harness Use

The school that I worked at used a Genie and a prayer. Hell, they didn't even have as many safety chains as they had lights in use and their electrics were under-weighted before I got there, though, so I suppose they had bigger worries. To my knowledge, they didn't even HAVE harnesses, and I...

Electrical violations! (Where's Waldo in Reverse)

Whoa! The Fire Marshall for this establishment must be a religious man, because only god could keep this place from burning to the ground in a few months' time. I wonder, do they have a personal safety waver for you to sign at the door when you come in, or is it printed on the admission slips...?

    Lets talk about lighting design....

From what my mentor told me, the high school in which I did the lighting once had a technical theatre teacher. *gasp* I know! I don't know how it is in the rest of the country, but as far as Nevada is concerned, I've never heard of another school that had anything but a general theatre teacher...
