    Mixing 4" and 6" counterweights

Thanks, folks. These are pretty much the thoughts that ran through my head. My system is wire-guided, and the linesets are all 12" or more apart, so width isn't much of an issue. Indeed, our system has no signage regarding its overall capacity. We're working on that. But I'm not too...

    Mixing 4" and 6" counterweights

My fly house has a mix of 4" and 6" width counterweights in its inventory. I'd say at least 90% of the weight is 2" high, 4" wide counterweights, maybe half a dozen 1"x4" bricks, and the remainder is 1"x6" bricks. All the pipe weight is 4" wide bricks. Setting aside the question of where the...

Welding two pipes together at an angle (coping tubes)

For large sonotube, I imagine you could just divide your numbers by 10, export to PDF, then scale it up 10x in AutoCAD.For the record, I've used it already and it worked wonderfully! I'll add pictures after I get the rest of the set done. :)

Welding two pipes together at an angle (coping tubes)

I had never seen this little web application before, but I'm going to try it out on a handrail I'm building. Check it out:http://www.metalgeek.com/static/cope.pcgiHappy welding!

    Floor Vents on Stage Floor

Hey there, For some reason, when my building was constructed, they put four 9"x36" HVAC vents on the stage floor: two on each side, just offstage of the proscenium, about 9' and 15' upstage of plaster. I can't eliminate them. But I do need to repair them, and I'd love to replace them with...

    Thorn Backdrop with Netting

I just finished making a bunch of tree drops with black 15 oz. Encore, using Rosebrand's "Scenery Netting" as a backer. This was our method:Cartoon the tree shapes out onto large pieces of kraft paper taped together. (We had mirrors of the same tree, so this way we only had to cartoon it...

    Opera Netting Alternatives

I've proceeded with running the stronger lines vertically. And it's doing a nice job on the pieces we've already finished. The folks at Rosebrand said that in most cases, they usually have to tie the panels of netting together, and that small zip ties tend to work well. I'll probably try using...

    Opera Netting Alternatives

The more I felt the material, the more I'm convinced I need to rework my plans a bit and run it all vertically. I've called Rosebrand a lot through the process of ordering all my material, so I'm trying not to overstay my welcome on the phone. But I agree it's the right way to find out. The...

    Opera Netting Alternatives

I'm using Rosebrand's 13'-3" scenery netting to support some velour cut drops, and I'm curious if anyone knows whether it matters which way it's oriented. Check out the website here: http://www.rosebrand.com/product788/133-Scenery-Netting-IFR.aspx?tid=2&info=netting.As it comes of the roll...

    Colleges in Tennessee worth attending?

I went to Vanderbilt, in Nashville, and I'd be happy to talk to you about it. I didn't go there with the intention to study Theatre originally, but I got involved, got hooked, majored in it and immediately started to work professionally after I graduated. I always leaned more toward scenery...

    Cheap laser plumb line?

I own and recommend the Ryobi Tek4 Self-Leveling Plumb and Cross-Laser Level. It's got a rechargable battery. I've used the Stanley ones in the past as well, and they're excellent, but you have to drop over $100 each for the laser plumb and the cross-laser, separately. The Ryobi does both for...

    Railing for a Spiral Staircase

In a set that had a steel/aircraft cable aesthetic, I simply drilled holes, at an incline through each of the 1x1 posts, then ran 1/8" aircraft cable through the holes. It fit with the design, and it's strong, even though it's not as hand-friendly as welded steel pipe.
