ETC - ION

So I have had my ION for only a short time, there are many great things about it, and many things that are different for the betterment of the console. But the one thing I truly dont understand, is why the fader wing needs additional DC power? Why cant it get its power from the USB cable. Seems slightly redundant, and just another cable to have to plug in.

My guess, and it is only a guess, is that the 5VDC on USB isn't enough power for the wing.

You do know that you can hook the wing directly to the desk and lose the USB connection, right?

Hmmm... Ill have to look into that. TY

So much better, thanks again!

If you hook the wing directly to the desk you don't need the extra power. If running the wing/wings with USB you need a power cable for each group. In a theatre i was in the other day with an EOS they have two 2x20s that are hooked together so they need only one power cord and USB cord to the console.

Just to add to this functionality discussion, why did ETC remove the "Clear" button on the cue faders, and why did they remove the "REL" button as well? I know that they are saying sneak is the new way to do it, but the REL was just a nice quick fix, same with the Clear function. If anyone has an answer, I'm just curious.
Thanks.

I feel your pain.

My OCD goes crazy when I look at the channels and I see allot of red [0]. Im getting used to it, but my natural instict is to [rel] all captured channels.

Im also have a hard time getting used to the high, soft, keys (not softkeys) on the ION, in comparison to the Expression.

Hooking the wing directly to your Ion desk does not require an external power source, as it draws power from the power supply of the console.

Connecting the fader-wing with a USB cable does require a separate power source, mainly because we can't draw enough power through USB to drive the LCD on those wings (2x10 and 2x20 wings).

Since the 1x20 fader-wing, which sits on top of the Ion console, has no LCD, it does not require the external power source.

My institution of higher education has an Ion and I'll be running a show this semester on it. I've been hitting the training manuals and videos. I'm definitely excited to understand this new board. My understanding is that coming from the Strand side of things, the transition will be relatively smooth.

Now here is my real problem, finding an appropriately sized ripoff style belt loop pouch for the RFR. (It's not an RFU/RRFU/wRFU anymore!) Steve Terry kindly linked me to the dimensions, and Derek suggested I make friends with the costuming department.

Look into what is known as a Chalk Bag, used by rock climbers to hold chalk. The chalk, BTW is used on the hands to keep the them dry and free of sweat.

Here's an example: Mammut Basic Chalk Bag, 86318 | Accessories | Climbing | GEAR | items from Campmor.
