Automated Fixtures VL1100s - Strange Color Mixing

Hello,

We have installed four VL1100s (VL1100 AS) into our lighting grid. I have been able to program, patch, address, and run the lights. I am currently having issues with the color mixing. I am utilizing an ETC Ion 1000, so the patch is for VL1000 AS. The current issue is that when selecting a color on the 'Color Wheel' there is a tie-dye effect. I have tried adjusting the lamp placement and re-configuring the VL. Is there something else that I am doing wrong?

If you need any other information, I will be glad to provide.

Check for a setting that allows "progressive transition" between colors. If I remember right, you can set that mode to either snap to a color, or allow it to "free wheel" between colors. In the snap mode, any DMX in the range will give you that color. In the "progressive" mode, only the center DMX value will give you that color.

Edit: Might be thinking of the wrong fixture if the 1100 is CMY mixing and does not use a color wheel.

The VL1100 is a CMY fixture.

Really dumb questions:
  • Is it possible there is a crushed dichroic gobo in the beam?
  • Is it with all colours or only certain combinations? It may be an artifact of the way Vari-Lite does CMY mixing, but if so I wouldn't expect it to happen for all colours.

1. These were brand new fixtures from Vari-Lite, so they did not come with any gobos in them.

2. It doesn't appear to be with all colors, mostly when you get into the Red/Amber range. It appears as though the yellow is making its way in.

I have been adjusting the lamp placement from fixture to fixture and it seems to be improving the way the color mixes. But, still isn't perfect. Has anyone else noticed that with these particular fixtures?

Unfortunately,
Poor evenness is a hallmark of the vl1000 series.
You are on the right track with adjusting the lamp. I believe the correct procedure is to place the magenta flags at 50% and then adjust the lamp for an even beam.
