Suggestions For Best Focusing Tool

I like the UFT for initial load-in and the FFT for convenience. My FFT is an earlier model, before Rob started annealing them, so it flexes too much to be any good for loosening cheeseboroughs.

None of these all-in-one tools are particularly good for adjusting the pan bolt. Either the placement of the socket or the bulkiness of the tool make me long for a c-wrench.

I have an early FFT as well. I was really sad the first time I tried it on a Cheeseborough and it flexed. I'll have to get one of the heat treated ones if it works for boroughs.

By pan bolt, you mean the yoke bolt and not the Set screw, right?

I have the Ratcheting UFT and I love it. The ratcheting part isn't critical, but I find that it makes life easier sometimes.

...If replacing the pan screw, I highly recommend these: Knobs Direct - # KD-2006 .

How many times are we going to have the same discussion?

How many times am I going to be suckered into buying "the latest and greatest," only to go back to using my 6" wide-jaw adjustable wrench 95% of the time?

Clearly I missed the pan screw replacement bit. I've will always prefer the c wrench. I may waste 3 seconds adjusting but I have more versatility with it. And I can take the yolks off of different instruments, bolt it to a wooden pole in a tent and do everything else without the help of another tool. When you have a wrench and know it well it takes about the same time to adjust it with a thumb as find the correct opening in a multiple-wrench, at least that's my experience.

Well, have you checked out Crescent's new ratcheting adjustable yet?

I'm not endorsing it at all, but I did take a minute to look at it while at my not-so-local home center.

I'm not endorsing it or anything, but I did take a minute to look at it while at my not-so-local home center.

No thanks, I've tried a few different kinds of wrenches like that and they never work as well as promised. They always fall off the head, or end up destroying the bolt heads.

All of our pan bolts have been replaced with t-handles so you can focus wrench free.
And crush your fingers, get stuff caught and not sit right. Folks before me in my theatre thought it was a good idea, personally I hate it, getting the t-handle to sit right is a pain, with heavy lights it's worse. I want to put the F nut back in every unit.

Seen so many versions of that over the years. The thing is, I dont think they handle 4 point bolts, and they only work in one direction. Lets be honest, sometimes you have to turn an adjustable wrench in the "incorrect" direction to get at fastener"

I keep buying the focus widgets, but don't own a single ratcheting adjustable wrench.

Anyone still have Crescent a slider wrench from a few years back?

Home Depot has these new Husky brand adjustables that they claim adjust twice as fast. Compared to my Circa 2007 Crescent, they sure do.

Yep, and it's buried in the bottom drawer where it belongs.

I agree with the comments on the wrench, I was just teasing Derek a little.

The Flat Focus Tool is my favorite as well. I can leave it in my back pocket all day and never think about it until I need it. I rarely come across a situation that it can't handle.

OR.. I say ban clamps, and change to Mega-Couplers. Some people don't like them, because some people are stupid :p

Also a Craftsman 44713 is the Best C-Wrench ever made. They are discontinued, but worth the $20 on ebay.
You may think that $20 for one wrench is insane, but you would be wrong. It is that good.

Worth noting. Turning an adjustable wrench "the wrong way" putting more force on the sliding jaw, is a myth. Just like most other wrenches, it is off set so you can get a better angle using the wrench either way. If you working on something that is so tight, that you fear that you might break the wrench, then you are using the wrong tool.

But really that Craftsman 44713 is a fantastic wrench,
-6" but opens to 1-1/8"(that's really wide!)
-the jaw does not slip at all; I mean at all
-It has Beak shaped jaw for getting into tight areas.

Where did you get t handles to fit?

handles don't fit standard c-clamps nicely. The old colortran c-clamps came with pan handles but they had longer spindles and a higher C that gave the handle room enuff to be usable with a fixture when hanging on a pipe.

Before you put handles on your clamps try a few out and remember Lextech's experiance.
