Telex Soundmate HA repurposed as IEM.

We were fortunate enough a few years ago to have our Hearing Assist system replaced with a T-Coil Loop system. My old Telex Soundmate (and receivers) sat idle in my Rack Room since. Today we're starting an interesting experiment. We pulled the SoundMate and installed it into our Orchestra Pit. For our upcoming Musical, we are going to try using it as an In Ear Monitor for the Pit. Yes, the quality of the Telex Soundmates is not... ideal. But it may be a low cost (free) alternative to give our pit musicians and conductor more monitor flexibility.

The T-Coil and SoundMate operate on wildly different spectrums so we don't need to worry about signal bleed either. Anyone else repurpose any gear like this with success?

We use an older Soundmate system at my church to feed a powered speaker in the nursery. Easier than running cables and buying amps, plus no one has complained yet about the sound quality.

It's a very creative idea to use it as an IEM, however it violates FCC rules. The band that the equipment operates in (72 Mhz) is dedicated to auditory assistance devices, which is for use by the hard of hearing or language translation. Will the FCC swoop in and levy a fine? Probably not, but it's always a good idea to play by the rules. See 47 CFR 15.237.

Ah. Good point. Had not thought of that. May have to re-evaluate this one... :?
