Opinions wanted. I'm sure there are a few....

Left is the Chauvet, right is the Source 4 with 4WRD LED back. The banding in the picture doesn't show in real life.

You get what you pay for. If you don't have the money for S4 tech then hold out save up and wait til you can.

There are plenty of other fixtures to look at. Find yourself a local dealer (or three) who can set you up with demo units from multiple manufacturers (ETC included) and try them all out in your space. That's the only way to really know if you can live with any deficiencies.

I will say that as a direct alternative, there will be some sacrifices with the Chauvet fixture, especially if used as front light for acting areas. That's not to say that it wouldn't be useful for specials and closer-range effects. It really depends on how you're planning on using the light and what you are expecting to get out of it.
Altman also makes the PHX, which doesn't often make it in to the good old boy's club here, but it is a worthwhile fixture to look at. Granted it is around the same price point as ETC's LED profile.

I generally agree with this, especially for ellipsoidal replacements. However, when it comes to wash fixtures, the more affordable (non-S4) options are very usable.

If this is for basic front light - faces - I'd probably hold out for S4 LED series 2. If side, back, top, or color wash, other fixtures can produce more saturated colors with more lumens.

The colorsource line is also definately worth a look. Not the same color range as the lustr, but it's certainly not that far off. The phoenix is one of the worst alternatives I've seen though, the "locking" shutters are terrible, and it is really difficult to get a good white out of it.

I will reinforce what others have said. Stay with ETC products as you will have support down the road from ETC if something happens to the fixture. If you can afford go with Series 2 with a EDLT lens or a Colorsource Spot fixture.

Thanks for the helpful and professional opinions. looks like we will go for ETC colorsource LED spots. Down the line when we get another grant we will stick with ETC Source Fours. We have an ETC Element lightboard and are very happy with the support and helpful customer base for ETC products.

Do try to get one or two in and look at it in your space before ordering a bunch. Don't ignore the Source 4WRD as an option for a "new" fixture, buying it with body, barrel and lens tube. Very good white, I think more lumens than Colorsource, near same price.
