Making the beam of a spotlight wider

Hello,

I'd like to mod a moving head LED light so its beam becomes wider and preferably softer at the edges. How could I achieve this without taking it apart?

I'm thinking about sticking an add-on lens to the front of the optics but I have no clue what kind of lens I need. Also, I'm concerned about the extra heat that might get trapped behind the thicker glass.

This is the fixture I'm working with. http://www.cameolight.com/en/produc...-ultra-fast-10-w-lumi-engin-led-moving-heads/

Thanks,

greg

Welcome to the ControlBooth Greg, glad to have you!

I believe the way to go about your modification would include Beam Shaping Diffraction, rather than a mechanical alteration. Several companies offer this type of product in a variety of beam angles-

Find the proper beam spread and attach the heavy sheet to the outside of said moving light with high temp tape or other means of attachment.

Changing moving light heads to mount accessories normally would include weight and other problems the very tight tolerance fixture design won't be able to compensate for. What fixture are you looking to modify? Are you looking for this wider beam as a mode so it becomes wider in one cue but acts normally in others? I take it for granted there is not gobo or gel wheels that could do this on this type of fixture.

Believe I'm working with Power Balls or something like that at the moment inside some prop lights. I see how they work but don't see short of gaffed diffraction media taiped to it and torn off a way - this in not knowing the design etc. in other ways than to manually remove - trip wire etc. If in a fly house, perhaps diffusion media in front of the lights that can fly out of the way?

Thank you both for your replies! In the meantime, I went ahead and took the lamp apart. Turns out it has one small, 50mm diameter plastic fresnel lens in each head, that's all. So, maybe I should try to change these lenses to shape the beams, they don't look expensive. That way I shouldn't have to worry about weight either.
