Was he the same Massachusetts Beranek who was part of Bolt, Beranek and Newman, in Cambridge?

(They were an MIT spinoff responsible for the Bitgraph; the first bitmapped terminal, and the original owners, for the IP crowd, of 4/8, before it was bought by GTE, and then Level 3.)

Yes. He. Was.

"It could be argued that he paved the way for the Internet:
In 1971 BBN invented email with “@” as we know it today. The ARPANET grew and when it
reached about 500 users it was split in two and rejoined by the TCP/IP protocol. This
occurred on January 1, 1983 and that is the official birthdate of the INTERNET. Other
networks soon joined and today people around the world enjoy the fruits of this invention."

TCP/IP--that would be something to have on one's resume!

I only really knew of Leo Beranek as one of the pre-eminent acoustical consultants, who along with his partners spawned a generation of acoustical consultants, who have substantially influenced the design of many buildings and fundamentally advanced the performing arts. The breadth of their influence is rather astounding when the performing arts work is stacked along side their digital and internet achievements and the less recognized department of defense work. Truly a life well lived.

What, being one of the creators of DMX isn't good enough ?.

[ Minor correction: BBN employee Ray Tomlinson was the one who applied the @-sign as the email separator character. Tomlinson died in March of this year, of a heart attack. ]
