3.5mm Headset Adapter

So for a while I've been thinking about DIYing a Clearcom (or generic intercom) headset. To prefix this I'm a Theatre Electrician and capable of simple soldering, but a little lacking on in depth sound knowledge.

I've seen: http://www.matgoebel.com/projects/headset
Which is where I actually got the idea.

Basically I'd like to take a project box, 9v battery, 4pin xlr, and a couple of 3.5mm panel mounts to make an adapter box for using a pc headset (dual 3.5mm).

Instead of building a powering circuit for the mic I'm thinking of using: https://www.ebay.com/itm/272445582127

If I cobble all this together will this work? Am I missing anything/are there any core concepts I am misunderstanding?

I'd think such an amplifier would work, though I can't be 100% sure on that.

I think the biggest potential problem is just how hard ClearCom packs can drive the earpiece.

A standard over the ear ClearCom headset is already capable of causing pain using power supplied from the pack. I'm not sure wiring an In ear device to it would do your hearing any favours...

The standing problem is that to avoid feedback, you have to have a headset with separated wires for talk and listen, and most headsets not built for PL share a common up the cable.

With PL-88's available for about a bill, and sometimes less, you really gotta think hard about whether this is worth it...

I remember modifying a few ClearCom "lightweight" headsets many years ago - I soldered on a headset jack and plugged in my own headphones. It was nice because everyone could plug in their own earbuds and not worry about what style everyone liked. That being said - I probably wouldn't hassle with it again, just out of necessity, as JA mentioned, but to each his own.

@Kyle McAnally Personally, with the way many users carelessly fling their headsets off their heads with their mics turned on, coupled with folks who suddenly scream their lungs out at someone with their mic turned on and still directly in front of their lips, the last headphone I'd want would be an "in-ear". No, no thank you. Perhaps you work with a better crowd where all users practice ultimate headset decorum.
Toodleoo!

Thanks for the feedback everyone,

For the record I'm not intending on using in-ear headphones or earbuds, they're just not personally comfortable for longer days, Just looking to open up more choices for headsets and learn a little from a project. I've been on the receiving end of a careless coworker whistling or flinging their headsets before, and I agree that I don't want that inside my ears.

Thanks!
K

I have one tactical style headset for situations in which I've needed to blend in on stage or in crowds mostly for corporate gigs. Clear Com and Telex both have versions that are decently affordable, but any time we put a crew on them I try to get the talk latch disabled as a protection for those wearing the tactical ear pieces... even then it can still hurt. The CC27 from Clear Com is a good choice or the 10A is a fun secret agent listen only style.
