X32 Wireless Inputs

I'm tech directing a production at my high school where we are playing sound cues on Multiplay into our sound board, a Berhinger X-32.

We are trying to make our setup so that the computer with the effect cues can be in the house with the rest of the remote sound operation(on IPads). One option for making that happen is to get a 50 ft Aux cord that runs from the board in the booth to the house.

But I am wondering... is it possible to set up a wireless computer input for the X32? Could I concieveably hook it up to the router that we already have for the remote IPads? Or should I look at the "12 input 32 bit USB interface" on the back as an option somehow?

No, it doesn't work that way. if this MUST be in the house, wireless mic pack plugged into the computer's headphone jack would be one way - note the headphone output is stereo and the mic transmitter is mono and the heaphone output is MUCH HOTTER than a microphone and this is not "plug and play."

A better option might be to use DI or interface made for computers - Rapco LTI-Blox, Radial Stage Bug SB-5, or the Whirlwind PCDI (requires phantom power), Radial Pro AV 1 (stereo in, mono out) or AV 2 (stereo in/out) or similar device, and run a mic cable to the booth.

Why does the laptop need to be in the house? This would seem a serious distraction and would doubtless promote use of mobile phones during your performances. "Why can't I tweet/Space Face/Pint-erest? Someone is using a LAPTOP!"

I thought as much, thanks for the tips! We will figure something out, probably a wired situation.

The laptop needs to be in the house preferably because we A) have a smaller booth space and B) would like to have both sound operators near each other so both can mix/run sound cues without running back and forth to the booth.

But I agree that it might create an point of contention for a few audience memebers, but we have a table set up at the back of house that is far enough from an audience seating area that I think most folks will draw the distinction.

Thanks again, this has been very helpful!

If the sound mixing console in already in the house, is there a reason the playback device can't be next to/on top of/ underneath the console? I hate mixing sound from a booth, especially for a musical, and am fortunate that the youth theatre company I've worked with uses our PAC little theater for their shows. Audio takes over one of the handicapped spaces at the back house right corner where wheel chairs have no access (go figure) but we can get the mixer in that space. The PAC built a rolling cart for an X32, with a shelf above the console to place wireless mic receivers, laptops, and the other misc stuff that we Mixerpersons need to run a show. You might see if your carps can build a "bridge" over the back part of the mixer to hold the laptop.

Very cool! A setup like that may be an interesting investment later on. Our sound board is not in the house but in our booth, and we operate sound remotely on Ipads from the house since it is easier to hear/mix than in our enclosed booth. The hope is that our sound cues can be operated right alongside the Ipad remotes for the same reasons. Sorry, I didn't explain well enough. But thanks so much for all the options!

I don't know what's worse - iPads or booths for sound.

Good luck with your show!

There are a couple remotes for Qlab -- I have an Android one that I use for, at least, rehearsals. You might use it for a performance, but it's a bit squirrely for that, for me.

Can I upload sound effect cues to a Berhinger X32? That would be very cool, I just assumed the cues only changed fader levels.

Huh? Upload what, the actual audio clip? The quick answer is "no". The longer answer is that WAV files can be written to a USB thumb drive and played from the console; whether or not one can play them back with any precision using a tablet or phone app controlling the mixer .... I don't know how well that would work out, but I don't use WiFi to control mixers in show situations. Too many ways for that to get hosed with everyone over the age of 8 having a WiFi radio in their pocket, purse or backpack.

Gottcha. I thought not. I think I misread TimmyP's comment above as uploading to the 'computer' housed within the board.

Thanks for all the suggestions! It is now our show week and we have a setup with a XLR cable that runs from the board into the house and then goes through a converter to an aux and then into the computer. This has been very helpful, thanks to all!

His comment was "computer in the booth", IIRC. Console in booth, playback source in booth and connected to console. Remote the playback app.
