@RonHebbard may recall previous discussions of finding "lab tracks" with which to experiment and learn the craft of mixing. I'm drawing a 4th of July blank... but I know I've seen several references. "I got my act together once, and promptly forgot where I put it."
I applaud your teaching this way.
"Learning live" with a band sucks because you can't really develop a good ear for what dynamics use can do when the
stage SPL contributes so much to the
house. Ditto for EQ. Once your student is familiar with how
dynamic control and EQs sound it will be time to totally mess with her head by replacing the studio monitors with PA, and the tracks with live mics and moving-target sound sources
.
But without a controlled environment in which to learn mixing and how/when to use the tools available, live mixing would be teaching from scratch and that's a duplication of work.
