Updating ONYX NX2, help

It doesnt loo like what the instructions say. here: https://support.obsidiancontrol.com/Content/Support/Installing_the_Operating_System.htm
It seems to just boot up to the regular hard drive instead of prompting me to update.. I can start the update manually, but idk how long the dark screen is supposed to last, there are no prompts at all.

Hoping to get some clarity form someone who has been through the process...

I start upgrade through settings, select the file, file is copied by the system, then i am prompted to remove all drives and press ok to restart, it then just stays dark after a small windows prompt says something about initializing installation....

Thanks

What’s the longest you waited? Also did you follow he proper steps of formatting the USB stick and also what size is the stick? Some consoles don’t like flash drives bigger than 16gb.

was gonna post an update. It mentions that minimum drive size is 16gb. I just cleared an old 16gb drive and flashed the image to it. it took like 3-4 times longer, maybe because usb 2.0 drive.

it is actually working as described in their documentation. i hope all is solved, its going through a windows os process... not many dark screens, just typical installation cycles, dialogues and resets and progress bars.

the strange thing is that after the failed attempts, some random diagnostic tools had the updated version number on em, but console still said it was the old version, and show files didnt load, couldnt start new one as well. Corrupt file notice kept coming up. The dark screens and dialogues only lasted seconds. I think maybe there was one time it just stayed on black screen for a long time.

just documenting things. i guess, make sure you have spare usb sticks, a pc, and 5 hours to spare.

the display is upside down. lol sheeesh. had to send it in last time it was upside down cuz they couldnt fix it on location.

Looking all good. Conclusion is that "memorex" drives are a risky buy, got a 2 pack of 64 gb. Flashed quickly, but dont work right, even had a random "no room on flashdrive" error message when there was clearly enough room. Probably need a deep format. One of the drives are not being recognized by my laptop or the board even.

Currently using 256gb flashdrive to transfer showfiles and fixture library, working well. the brands of the two drives that work are sandisk (16 gb booter) and samsung (256 gb personal storage)..

good luck to all.

The issue with flashdrives also applies to digital audio consoles. There have been reports of problems with both recording and updating with consoles from Yamaha, Behringer and Allen & Heath. The sandisk ones are frequently recommended and it seems they are "Class 10" drives. Most other name brands are too. I have no idea who rates flashdrives in different classes.

I've had this message when trying to copy a file larger than ~4GB onto a FAT32 flash drive. There may be room, but the filesystem can't handle an individual file that big, and that's the ambiguous message that pops up. Formatting the drive as exFAT removes that limitation.

I honestly won't trust a flash drive from anyone other than the big players - Sandisk, Kingston, PNY, Samsung, etc. And even then, if it's an older or lower end drive, they can be finnicky. I've had many USB flash drive issues in consoles over the years. I have also had an NX2 fully install the Windows Embedded OS but not fully install Onyx, when I re-installed just Onyx (via the regular install file, same as installing on a laptop, this was 4.6.1226) via the software update in the Onyx menu, it worked fine.

Interesting thing to know that u can do that. But I hope I can always just do full install so I don't have to worry about some part of the console being messed up.

Now the question is, do I try to return the drives that I marked with sharpie, or try to reformat.

Trust is hard to gain, easy to lose. For the small cost of a 'big player' drive, I'm trusting 'big' and discarding the others.

I guess I will find out soon if memorex can be trusted. Anyone know of a good tool for pc to test drives? Also, Target losing my trust for selling em if they are actually trash. Lol. But I've had SanDisk SD cards need deep clean and partitioning before. Don't remember the tool I used.
