I'd like to get ideas from costume designers and costume makers as to their techniques of aging a costume.

We're working on a puppet production that takes place right after WW!, we'd like the audience to believe that all the materials and puppets were created in 1919 and are now being performed.

We have a pretty good idea on how to age the puppets (paint techniques) but would welcome aging techniques for the puppet costumes and live actor costumes.

We're using natural and synthetic fabrics.

    tx!

We've used tea to age various fabrics before. Vary the strength to vary the aging.

Manhattan Wardrobe Supply sells distressing kits. I've got one on order but haven't gotten it to play with it yet.

Usually we use tea, coffee, actual dirt, makeup dirt, belt sanders, files, car tires, concrete sidewalks, spray paint, regular paint, makeup, etc to distress costumes.

My favorites are running the costume piece over with the car and burying it in the dirt.

(For best results, remove actor prior.)
