Aladdin's Lamp

Our touring company is doing a production of Aladdin next season and rather than the typical fog machine for the Genie's appearance, the director would love for smoke to come out of the lamp itself. Anyone have any experience with this? Any ideas are appreciated.

Concealed effects are always fun to do. You could go expensive and fit in This.

or if money is tight. You could rig up fog in a can with a way to spray it when they pick up the lamp.

How much smoke do you want? There are a few ways to get smoke to come out of the lamp, but it might be difficult to get enough out to cover the entrance. You might be able to get a high volume of smoke if you have the machine built into a larger set piece and the lamp is placed on that (false bottom) to allow the smoke to come out of the spout. This might even ensure that you get the smoke close enough for the entrance.

Does your show already have pyro? Ultratech makes several prepackaged smoke effects. I've used several different ones for this effect. These trigger with an e-match so usually you need the AHJs blessing before using them, but if you already have pyro then they're pretty easy to add to the shot list.
