Conventional Fixtures Altman 360 ellipsoidal

I was recently given a couple of the original Altman 360 fixtures. I was wondering if anyone has any info on them. I am specifically looking for the lamp types it can take. The light has a EGG 750w lamp right now but i want to go down to a lower wattage.

* All data provided by Altman Stage Lighting website, 1999.
* 3.5 Series - set for cosine distribution with EHD 500 watt.
* 360 Series - set for cosine distribution (most have 'hot' center).
* 360 Series - Date is shown for both the EHF (750 watts 300 hours)
and the new more efficient HP600 (600 watt 300 hours) lamps.
* 1KL Series - set to 'flat field' distribution. (FEL-1000w 300 hours)
* Shakespeare Series - 'flat field' distribution. (FLX-HX600/115V)
# Theses two fixtures have the same photometrics when set for cosine
distribution, however the 10 degree is capable of 490,875 VS 343,000
candela, when adjusted for 'peak center'.

I know I used to have more info, but I certainly can't seem to find it now.

The Photometrics Handbook lists the DNT and DNS for the 360 6x9, DNT & DEB for the 360 6x12, and the DNT, DEB, EGE, and EGG for the 360 6x16.

I don't know offhand which lamps are still manufactured. 360s are outdated, but they're stilly fully serviceable when you just need something that shoots light out one end.

You can still get both 500 watt DNS lamps and 500 watt EGE lamps. They both function fine with these instruments. I slightly prefer the DNS because it preserves the lamp filament geometry of the original 500T20/9 incandescent lamp. The EGE uses a coiled lamp filament just like the EGG lamp that you found in yours. Bench focusing these is quite a trial, but if you are patient you can get a passable result. I think that the DNS is easier to bench focus and the lamp filament shadow is slightly less noticable. Your results may vary!

There was an incandescent lamp available @ 250 watts, by the way.

I've had fine luck with the EGE in our small space. As long as the throw is relatively short (under 25' or so), you get a decent light.

Does anyone have spare burn bases (caps, not sockets -- sockets are still available) they want to dispose of? Possibly in trade for Altman 360 and/or 360Q parts? I am also looking for burn bases for Century 6 inch and 8 inch Lekos -- we have some real antiques here!

I have some caps you can have for the price of shipping. They are for the 360Q though. The casting is the same, they just don't have that triangular plate. You could probably have that made if you're interested. Heck I probably also have lenses, tubes, etc.

I'm in tech week right now, but feel free to PM me if you are interested. Trying to de-clutter my theatre as well as my personal storage unit – both of which contain a bit of unused lighting gear.

What kind of unused fixtures do you have? Me and my brother are soon to be owners of a startup audio and lighting company. Any fixtures you don't use may be great use for us.

I don't have much (that is usable) to my name, but my theatre has a bunch of Par 64's they might be willing to unload cheap. At least that is the direction I'm pushing them in.

Can you post the model number or picture of the Century 6" ellipsoidal you need caps for? I may have some.

These are the 1970's version, like the Model 2312 (spec sheet attached). Steel and cast parts. Still beauties!

I also need caps for some 8x9 Century Lekos, same vintage. JPEG scan of their spex attached too.

I have one or two pre-built ones in storage. Sorry, not for sale - not because I am going to use them, but instead if you have these fixtures you should know how to service them. And in doing so you don't seem to be missing, but instead need to work on them.

What parts are you looking for? The Pentium under the lamp socket are better made out of 1/8" or 14ga steel, Easy to copy and fabricate better.

The insulator pad under the lamp socket out of ceramic fiber - easy to fabricate, bases can be saved 90% of the time or replace in often needing to drill new alignment holes. And aluminum cap the same 360Q to 360.

If on 360 series asking for the lamp socket assembly... above is the parts for them, no you cannot buy the assembled parts of it as per a S-4 lamp cap assembly in a turn key type of thing in being done. I should go into business in easily making such things as opposed to teaching how to fix them... but I'm a tech person an trainer. Easy to train how to fix such parts which if serviced will go on lasting many years.

"I am also looking for burn bases for Century 6 inch and 8 inch Lekos"

Now that is more challenging and I do have parts that I could provide dependant on which Century part is needed. But first is it you are looking for replacement assemblies due to fixtures missing the lamp cap, or are you just looking for the easy in replacing what is already there but needing work? If you have a Leko missing it's lamp socket assembly, take photos and note what model it is. It's possible I have a cap or three for them which I could set up.

If your fixtures already have lamp caps, they just have toasted sockets or wiring... I would prefer to save my parts for fixtures missing such things, and teach how to preserve what you have to bring them back to factory specification and modern standars. Really easy to do. Already went into detail about doing this a few years ago on this website, but would be able to do so again.

Perhaps send me a fixture (PM for where to ship) and in re-finishing it back to specification, I'll post a step by step photo guide in materials and how to for the rest.

Otherwise, Derek recently sent me a Texas Leko that will be similar in some ways. I can refinish it in posting photos and steps of how to in a similar fixture. Just have to know how and such fixtures can last years upon years longer.

I kind of specialize in old lights and followspots in making them as good as new or better, this even if long since past their prime.

Thanks for your input Ship. I've been restoring and using these things myself since the 70s, so I know what I am looking for. What I need is the cast base that the socket, whip, etc. attaches too -- the actual "lamp cap." I have plenty of MPF sockets, triangle plates, whips, insulators, and screws -- but I need the caps because some bright boy saw asbestos whips and just threw out the whole thing instead of clipping off the wires.

So, I need Altman 360 (radial) caps AS WELL as Century Model 2312 (6" Lekolight) and Century Model 1570 (8" Lekolight), as noted abouve (see the spec sheets for the Century models posted March 31).

Great! I have caps for 360Q which is the same as radial, but you can just buy them as the exact same thing. If need to be correct in hammertone brown or texture black paint, that's a discussion to do for restoration sense, but such methods in restoring color are not for workable fixtures. Better for workable fixtures to have mis-matched colors where needed and buying the new Altman lamp caps.

On Century 2312, Nope I don't have one of them extra, have a 2321 and suspect it's just a different lens version and no spares to the one I have. On the other 1570, I think I have that 1/4 turn lamp cap in stock, send me a PM with an address and I can provide it. I only have two, do you need both?

Sorry if I misread or insulted, My goal is to train and not just provide - especially if giving away stuff I own and have worked hard to study and collect. Thanks for the explination of how those parts got lost in it helps le me give away as opposed to teach.

TBA for me, a very long post about a Little Stage lighting fixture Derek sent me from about 1964 but really like 1957 technology. Detailed in every step and part about the Leko in how I do the restoration back to factory spec and better. Will encourage your methods and tech to help me and others also restore and keep the old things running best.

Luke--Here are pix of the Century caps I have. The fixtures are model 1491 and have the rounded yoke. Do your Century 6" have the thumb latch on the body at the rear to retain the lamp cap?
ship-- I assume you have a Century 1491 in your collection?

Century #1480 (or later Century/Strand #2211) 6x9 Leko (c. post 1970); Has HX-600 lamp G-9.5 Med. 2Pin lamp socket and lamp - should be 500w EGE P-28s Medium Pre-Focus lamp. Gobo slot included. Fixture never had a P-28s lamp in it - was designed with a plate to use a G-9.5 socket in not being an upgrade. Radial Base.

Could be 1491 - best my research could reveal is above. This fixture is perhaps the last generation of radial Leko - one for this concept with a G-9.5 lamp fitting into it. Same yoke.
