An acronym for the American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It is a code for representing English characters as numbers where each letter or symbol is assigned a number from 0 to 127. This is a common code for storing text documents on computers. The code becomes particularly important when transferring documents between computers.

One major application for our industry is using ASCII to transfer the show data file from one computerized lighting console to another across brands or families. It is a "least common denominator" approach, best used for cues, channels, and levels. It does not support palettes, effects, macros or other features of most modern consoles.
