Best fluorescent blacklight tubes? And their data?

...
Many LD's write a song per page and when the song changes, they just turn the page for that specific song. So the artist (or DJ) can change the set to match the audience...

In the 2 years I worked with my current employer, and the ~15 years I've been doing party PA's, I've never seen such... coordination?
In my experience, usually a DJ shows up with a laptop containing thousands upon thousands of songs (or back in the day, a suitcase full of a hundred CDs or more and a Denon CDJ.) In any case, you have no idea what he's going to play or how, or when he cuts/crossfades to another song.

...
As for black lights, especially the florescent type, there is not really a good instant on because the lamps need to come to full temperature before they reach full output.

This is exactly the electrical engineering challenge I want to explore.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but, I have a feeling it could be possible with the following process:
1. Keep the fluorescent tube electrodes (heaters) hot at all times by passing a "standby current" through them, but without actually striking an arc.
2. At the moment high brightness is required, strike the arc, then back off the filament current, as the arc will keep the mercury vapour ionized.
3. For lower brightness, use a reduced arc current, with a proportionally higher filament current (though still less than the "standby current", to keep the arc from extinguishing.
4. For very low brightness, use a high-frequency PWM (pulse-width modulation) of the arc, so to the human eye, the lamp "appears" dimmer than it really is.
5. To "dim-start" the tube, use a similar PWM technique so a high enough voltage (and sufficient current) can be applied across the electrodes, with the lamp still appearing quite dim to human eyes.

Obviously this requires designing a custom electronic ballast. [smile] I suspect it will become necessary for such a ballast's electronics to have a fairly good idea of the temperature in the tube (or at least the electrode/heater temperature), so I'm wondering if this can be determined reasonably accurately by monitoring the heater resistance in real-time. Actually, I'm thinking electrode/heater temperature is the most relevant, since that's what has to liberate electrons! That's why I'm seeking data sheets / technical info on various fluorescent tubes. Monitoring arc resistance might be difficult, but might be necessary too. I'm not sure yet.

If I understand correctly (anyone please correct me if I'm wrong), metal halide / HID will never be possible for this application, because regardless of the amount of arc current, the spectral output of the lamp still depends on the bulb fill to come up to specified normal temperature.

But I believe fluorescent technology can work, because the spectral output depends pretty much only on the phosphor coating, which need only be sufficiently irradiated/energized. Even if that energy comes from a sudden huge higher-than-spec. arc current for a brief moment of time.

I think LED is still too costly and/or too close to the visible spectrum, to have comparable performance-per-unit-cost with fluorescent. I also heard the UV light destroys the actual potting of the LED itself, so these don't last forever. (Neither do fluorescent tubes, but they're a hell of a lot cheaper to replace when it does come time for replacement!)

And incandescent is crap for emitting UV. I think we all know this. :D

I don't know of any other lighting technology to get UV.

Either do the manufacturer's. I don't worry about it. I go the other way and try not to hide it. I use Mac3's or VL's in UV and just blast as much as I can. I have strobing, dimming, chasing, pan/tilt, etc. People remember the effect, not so much the little things we worry about.

In the 2 years I worked with my current employer, and the ~15 years I've been doing party PA's, I've never seen such... coordination?

I'm truly blessed to have a career in that I get to work with such a diverse group of LD's. Each has their own style and way to run lights. I make it a point to watch their shows and try to learn from them. We never stop learning. I think I learn something from each and every LD I've worked with and I can say friendships have come from our working together.

I could be tremendously off base here as I've never worked (or enjoyed) the club scene. Don't take these as criticism. However, I'm still not sure you know what you really want.

While the whole color organ thing sounds like a really neat effect, it sounds like it's just that: an effect. Wouldn't an entire show of it get boring? You could run different songs in different patterns, but how does the light decide to change patterns? You'd still need a board op to do that, who would still lag behind. I see the value in having the lights synced automatically to the music, but I still don't think that you're going to get the perfect show you envision without pre-programming. At that point, we're back to what a MA2 can already do, just with UV strobes.

How do you propose controlling these? While tempo can be gathered from the main mix, I'm interpreting your design as having each track independently control separate lights. So you'll either need to send each light an audio signal for timing and a DMX for pattern control, or somehow get all the individual tempos into a board to process it into DMX. I'm not sure which way would be better, but neither sounds easy.

You've got two distinct separate problems here: The first is figuring out the UV Strobe. The second is actually using them for an automatic color organ.

Well, for starters, I'm not sure UV really has an application in directional / moving lights. (Lighting designers here, correct me if I'm wrong... but I figure UV is flooded across the entire dance floor area (in clubs) or entire stage area (in theatre). That's how I've always seen it anyhow, from the very first time I got into a club when I was 18, to how I still see it.) So sound-modulated UV (the effect I'm trying to achieve) doesn't need any operator control; the UV lights only need a single "intensity" channel, which could be carried via DMX, ESTA/ANSI E1.3 (0-10V), DALI, etc. And I envisioned that signal generated by a separate device from the main lighting console. ...Though I've recently been told here that some lighting consoles have an audio input, in which case the console's firmware could/should/would map received audio level to light intensity on the DMX channel assigned to the venue's UV lights.

As for colour organ effects on various visible lights sync'd to specific instruments (live band), or specific frequency bands of a final mix (DJ), I envisioned separate devices (essentially the "colour organs") analyzing the audio and determining the respective light intensities. Then you can have a device that combines those intensity signals with X/Y direction signals, gobo selection, etc. coming from the lighting console. There's got to be a product that can read a DMX or DALI channel, or ESTA/ANSI control voltage, from one device (eg. the colour organ) and combine it with DMX channels from another device (eg. the lighting console), and then send that combination down a single cable to the light fixtures. Or a lighting console that can read DMX/DALI/0-10V signals coming from an external device, and combine them with its own light show program. (Or another possibility is if a console has an audio input, it can do the bandpass filtering and then envelope filtering digitally (essentially a "virtual colour organ"), and create all the necessary DMX signals internally.)

In any case, you've now got operator control deciding "when and where" to place the light, with the actual audio automatically modulating the intensity of the light.

That's a step up from operator control deciding "when and where", while intensity is also fully manual, or some pattern of arbitrary rises and falls pre-programmed in the lighting console. (Or some "pseudo-sync" pulse initially clocked from the console's "TAP SYNC" button, but that soon drifts out of phase with the music beat (unless the operator is constantly tapping that button). But even so, that just "fakes" a tempo pulse; it doesn't represent the music's dynamic range.)

I just T@E'd Martin Rush Par-4 UV and LOVED Them. I just wish they where larger. The Fixture generates light @ 400mW Wavelength UV.

The Par-4 UV is Programmable, (Both DMX and Stand Alone. It has GREAT DIMMER and STROBE features where you can adjust the Intesity AND Duration and has one PreProgrammed Show.

Its also very efficient needed only 1A @120V per fixture.

I just wish it had a larger coverage area.

I was using it to Light Wildfire UV Reactive Painted Props.

Btw, The Wildfire UV Reactive Paint, (made by Rustoleum) NEEDS a White Primer Base on all base surfaces.

The best effect was the UV Strobe on a Hanging Corspe in the middle of a totally dark room....

I'm buying 6 more Par-4 UV's to cycle out my HID UV Cannons.

Hmm... interesting idea.
4 things came to mind just now:

1. Can the dowser open and close at frequencies up to as fast as ~5 Hz?
2. Can the dowser's ballistics be reasonably managed? (ie. rapidly open-up or close-down to a specified position, without overshooting and oscillating too long?) I'm not a mechanical engineer, so this might be a little outside my realm. (Could be a fun project in terms of servos and tuning feedback loops, though.)
3. Can the dowser dissipate the heat? (Ok, the answer is "somehow yes", because cinema projectors have done this for almost a century. I guess the real question is "How?")
4. Being mechanical, would noise be an issue?

Perhaps the solution to these is to use a focused beam, put a small and fast servo-controlled mirror at the focal point, have a fixed matte-black "light absorber" to which the light can be deflected (similar to DLP projectors), and then optics to collect the "unwasted" light (that doesn't go to the absorber) and project it where desired?

Makes me wonder now, if there's already a commercial product (not necessarily UV) that works like this, and can be modified for UV... and rapid control...
You're looking for a Q Switch, normally used on lasers.

You can't strobe a mechanical dowser, with any reasonable lifetime, at 5Hz, no.

Blacklight is UVA. UVA (315-400 nm). UVB (280-315 nm) is for suntan lamps (aka. Cancer sticks). UVC (100-280 nm) is Germicidal & medical applications. 400nm is not "really" UVA however as it's completely in the visible spectrum., so it's really Violet more than Ultra-violet. You need to be around <385 to not see the light. 365nm is a sweet spot for for a lot of Phosphorescence.

HID or LID (Low intensity discharge- aka, Fluorescent) lamps will also emit some visible light as well as part of their spectrum. They also have limited dimming capability depending on the lamp and the driver used. Blacklight Blue lamps are merely UVA lamps (~350-365 nm) with a dark phosphor coating to help contain any residual visible light that Mercury vapor Fluorescent lamps emit as part of their spectrum. USHIO makes a UVA lamp that is HID, and is used in the Wildfire fixtures. I'm not certain if Altman also uses that lamp in their traditional UV effect fixtures.

Be careful with LED fixtures that are billed as "UltraViolet", and make sure they are 365 nm or less to be true UV, or you'll see a lot of purple (Violet) light. Only LEDs will give you the functions/features you are seeking I believe.

For what worth in it sounds like LED is a better option for you in the end.

Believe all Altman Fixtures and other UV fixtures below are discontinued in having gone LED & listed lamps for them are for the most part also discinued but suppliers have stock... doing inventory this week in fact. (There might be alternatives in lamps I could look into for a specific lamp if wished.) Personally planning a huge lamp purge in the coming weeks - around a thousand of them from the inventory. A shame, but some have not been used for over 20 years. Not yet planning to get rid of the T-12 BLB tubes, but only a few more years in only infrequent small theater use of them.

It is also in theory, possible to have a lamp made for you within your specifications if you have enough bulk sales to justify it. I know I got Martin Atomic 3000 lamps custom made for me amongst other lamps in the past. If you have a volume of lamps needed, a supplier might these days be able to do a custom line for you. Contact your lamp supply chain in seeing if an option.

Finished inventorying that cabinet today... yep most of those fixture lamps in stock even if most fixtures or sales for other fixture lamps resale are long past in stocking them as with lots of other lamp types I had to research as to what they were from over 20 years ago. At this point, cheaper to keep them than properly dispose of them. This even if they take up space in the "Open Space" concept nonsense priority for the Shop Management these days.

I have a lot of obsolete lamps I am going to be getting rid of after end of year invintory. Interested in A lot of stock in everything one might think of contact off line.
