Had a project recently were we built some light weight mobiles for a one-off tent event. The installers complained the knots weren’t holding. I’m no fisherman and beyond the basic stage hand knots I’m no boyscout

What’s the best knot(s) to use for permanent hold on monofilament line?

Blood knot. Typically used to attach to ends together but it's excellent knot for tying to s-hook or what ever hardware you are using. It pulls up nice and compact and looks nice.

That’s what we attempted to tie but must have failed at.

There are a bunch, but improved clinch and the surgeon’s loop cover most needs. Make sure to moisten the line before tightening or the line will melt as you tighten it down.
Use a nail-clipper to trim the end.
Supper glue not needed for these two.

How about the blood knot followed with a dab of adhesive which will bond the plastic?
Yes, Super glue it preferred. Many other adhesives have solvents in them which will degrade the mono-filament. However, with a properly tied not and properly sized Mono-filament, no glue is necessary.
