Interesting article.
For someone so set on not spending any money, this tactic wouldn't work if you didn't have the heapload of gear he had at his disposal.
The usual situation of someone with no money means they also don't have any equipment either.
If you had the money to spend, renting more wireless mics could have resolved the situation of those 7 mics across the front of the stage, the waves unit and both iPads.
