Coloram II Microprocess serial numbers?

I'm working on repairing some Coloram II scrollers and while looking for parts the microprocessor says "Each chip is also serial numbered for proper operation with the Coloram II system. If you need a specific serial number, please let us know." Does this mean the serial number needs to match the chip I'm replacing? Why would I need a specific number? I don't understand the importance. Thanks for the help.

Being that it has been 10 years since I have had to troubleshoot a ColorRam scroller, some of this is dim memory and other parts are conjecture.
It could be that the ColorRam PSU created a patch table based on Serial # to connect data to the correct device. As I remember, the ColorRam scroller would report back to the PSU if there was a problem, this bi-directional communication would require the PSU to know which distinct unit (ser#) was connected and reporting a problem. You wouldn't want two units with the same serial # on a PSU because it wouldn't be able to communicate properly.
Good luck,
John
