Custom Sliding door-The Producers

Our high school is putting on the producers this spring. For those of you who are not familiar with the show, during "Springtime for Hitler," the set is a staircase which leads down from a set of double doors which are cut out into the shape of an eagle. we don't have an way to have the set hang from any bars, so we were trying to think of a way to have the doors slide open.

Anyone have any ideas for how to create this effect? We came up with ideas for having a 12' track across the top to have the 2 halves slide along, but it would be massive- we dont have much room backstage.
I was thinking using tracks similar to those from a dishwasher drawer- they extande pretty far and can come back in the same way.
if anyone has any better ideas, I'm open to those as well!
We have 5 girls dressed in very elaborate (funny) costumes which we want to hide for as long as we can. While we can do this with lighting, we are somewhat limited here too.

One option is to attach the doors to the walls and have each unit on wheels. So when the doors open your just pulling the two walls apart. Only problem there is that there will be a slight gap between the upstage platform and the stair unit.
