The relationship between the value of the control input to the dimmer and the RMS voltage output of the dimmer, or, in the case of a mechanical dimmer in a luminaire, the field lumens of the luminaire. Typical curves are square law, modified square law, linear voltage, and linear light. Curves are often selectable in dimmer software.

A dimmer curve can be determined by plotting the hexadecimal value of the DMX512 input on one axis of a graph, and the RMS voltage or field lumens value on the other axis. Note that the field lumens calculation is required for mechanical dimmers, rather than a single-spot brightness measurement. This is because many mechanical dimmers introduce artifacts into the beam of the luminaire, causing different amounts of dimming in different parts of the field.
