Dmx over Ethernet

If talking ETC Net2 and Net3 you can ONLY communicate from Ion to a node (Gateway in Net3 speak) over Ethernet.

You can get 2 universes out of the DMX ports of a legacy Ion, 4 from a newer Ion XE. Note that it’s possible to configure those DMX ports for any starting range of DMX. Want both ports at universe 1, no problem. Want a port at universe 6 ?, also doable. That’s configurable in the console shell.

The nodes DMX outputs can do 1, 2 or 4 universes (1 port, 2 port or 4 port node/gateway), any universes you desire up to 64 or something. This is configured in Concert software.

The limit to all this is the address count of the console. Legacy base model is 1024 addresses, up to 6144. XE can go to 12288 addresses, base is 2048

More specifically, if you have a "legacy" winXP ion, you are 1024 addresses up to 3072. Only the win7 ions will handle 6144 outputs. And all of this is reliant on using software version 2.6 or later, prior to that your output counts were much more granular.

A bit more info on that "ethernet cable" connection.

Most networks involve a central switch/router/hub device and all devices connect to it in a "star" configuration.

IF you have a true crossover cable and/or auto switching ports (computers and ETC products vary) then a single cable can serve.

Good point Rick.

As well as a switch in the mix, between console and node/gateway if only for the data connection, the switch is going to want to provide Power Over Ethernet (PoE) for the node/gateway to operate. Unless the node was purchased with a power supply, they no longer ship with one.

Back in the days of Radio Shack you could buy wall warts easily. They also had multi-purpose versions with multiple tips and variable voltage. I'm someone has something similar.

@RickR And in your choice of AC or DC.
