ETC Expression and DMX

Do you have to have EtcNet to run/program DMX straight from the back of an ETC Expression. My intuition says no, but just want to make sure.

No, one does not need ETCnet. Depending on model, ETC Expression (I), 2x, and 3, have one, two, or three "DMX512 Out" XLR5F ports (though not respectively, as that would make things too easy).

I am not sure what all that is but I have run an ETC expression system 3 times and found it the most easiest system to use out of all the digital lighting systems I have used. Other than the one analog system i used that where you plugged light in to the outlet on the dimmer pack that is channel it showed up on the board with that system it had a non-digital non programmable board. But I have found ETC expression to be the easiest to use.
